Officials: NATO chopppers kill Pakistani troops

NATO helicopters from Afghanistan intruded into northwest Pakistan and attacked a military check post near the border on Saturday, killing up to 25 troops and wounding 14, Pakistani military officials told Reuters.

A senior Pakistani military officer said efforts were under way to bring the bodies to the headquarters of Mohmand tribal region from their post located on hilltops near the Afghan border.

"The latest attack by NATO forces on our post would have serious repercussions as they without any reason attacked on our post and killed soldiers asleep," he said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The Associated Press reported that Pakistan state TV had reported the same death toll, following earlier conflicting reports.

A Pakistani military spokesman confirmed the pre-dawn attack on the Salala post in the tribal region of Mohmand and said casualties had been reported, but gave no details.

"NATO helicopters carried out an unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on a Pakistani check post in Mohmand agency, casualties have been reported and details are awaited," the spokesman told Reuters.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousaf Gilani strongly denounced the attack, according to a message on Twitter by Radio Pakistan.

The governor of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province criticized the incident, calling it "an attack on Pakistani sovereignty."

NATO supplies suspended
Journalist Ahmad Mukhtar said in a message on Twitter that Pakistan was suspending NATO's truck supplies that travel through Pakistan to Afghanistan.

Reuters, citing Pakistani officials, later reported that trucks and fuel tankers were stopped at Jamrud town in the Khyber tribal region near the city of Peshawar, hours after the raid.

"We have halted the supplies and some 40 tankers and trucks have been returned from the check post in Jamrud," Mutahir Zeb, a senior government official, told Reuters.

Another official said the supplies had been stopped for security reasons.

Colonel Gary Kolb, spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, said the helicopters were taking part in a strike that was coordinated effort with ISAF, Pakistani military and the Pakistani border authorities, NBC News reported.

He said they had responded to small arms fire. Asked to confirm that it was retaliatory, he said yes.

ISAF was working on both paper and video statements, but was still determining the circumstances.

"This has the highest priority to ensure that we get all the facts straight," Kolb said.

He noted that even if some of supply routes through Pakistan were closed, there were "contingencies built into the system" to deal with these types of disruptions.

The Salala check post, about 1.5 miles from the Afghan border, was recently set up by the Pakistan army to stop Taliban militants holed up in Afghanistan from crossing the border and staging attacks, officials told The Associated Press.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. local time in the Baizai area of Mohmand, where Pakistani troops are engaged in fighting Taliban militants.

Various unnamed officials had previous put the death toll at between seven and 13.

A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Kabul said the coalition there was aware of "an incident."

The attack comes as relations between the United States and Pakistan, its ally in the war on terror, are already strained following the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces in a secret raid on the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad in May.

U.S. helicopters accidentally killed two Pakistani soldiers near the border last year, prompting Pakistan to temporarily close the border to supplies shipped through the country to NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Newton keeps Colts winless with 27-19 win (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Cam Newton threw for 208 yards and ran for one score and DeAngelo Williams scored twice Sunday to help the Carolina Panthers hold off the winless Indianapolis Colts 27-19.

The Panthers (3-8) ended a 12-game road losing streak by winning outside Charlotte, N.C., for the first time since Dec. 27, 2009 when they beat the Giants in New York.

Newton was 20 of 27 and carried nine times for 53 yards. Williams ran 15 times for 69 yards including the game-sealing score -- a 2-yard TD run with 10:23 left in the game.

The Colts dropped to 0-11 for the first time since 1986 and have lost six home games in a season for the sixth time in the Indianapolis era.

Curtis Painter was 15 of 29 for 226 yards with one TD for the Colts and threw two late interceptions in the end zone, ending any hopes of a comeback.

Small Business Saturday: Small Retailers Fight Back With Deals After Black Friday

Owners: Linda Lea, Maria Baugh and Pam Nelson Promotion: $5 off a dozen cupcakes (usually $30). Last year, with the same promotion, they saw a 50 percent sales increase on Small Business Saturday. How To Maximize Sales on Small Business Saturday: "It's not too late to start really pushing," Baugh says. "Have signange up in your store, make sure customers have something like a postcard to take with them. Get the word out through social media. Tell everybody, post and tweet and shout it from the rooftops. Train your staff. You have to explain exactly how it works. There's a little bit of educating the customer involved, so make sure your staff can answer questions. We have a bonus plan for staff -- whoever gets the most people to sign a card and come in gets a bonus, which is a big incentive. Offer a popular item as a special -- if you throw in something for the customer, you'll get back so much more." Why Baugh Likes Small Business Saturday: "We're marketing much more aggressively this year. AmEx has provided a lot of tools for small business -- we downloaded a lot of marketing materials and we hired NYU students to walk around and hand out postcards to make sure people know about this promotion. We've been tweeting and posting, doing email blasts. We want to increase sales by more than 50 percent. Our slogan is 'march to a 1,000' -- our goal is to have 1,000 people come in and use their AmEx card that day. "This just really helps give small businesses a leg up. Big box stores by their nature have so many advantages. They actually have marketing budgets and have teams to promote what they're doing. They can sell in volume and do all kinds of things that small businesses can't. They own Black Friday. Then Cyber Monday came along. AmEx was super smart to say 'what about the little guys?' especially in this economy. It has been extremely tough. We started three years ago, in the heart of the recession, and we've worked like dogs and we're doing okay, but a lot of businesses aren't, no matter how hard they work. This will probably be a make or break season for a lot of businesses, and there's no better time to get this support."

Bachmann says Fallon show song shows sexism, bias (AP)

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann lashed out Wednesday at NBC for not apologizing or taking immediate disciplinary action for an off-color song played during her appearance on Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night."

In her first comments on the flap, Bachmann said on the Fox News Channel that the Fallon show band displayed sexism and bias by playing a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song as she walked onstage for Tuesday's show. The title of the song is "Lyin' Ass B----."

"This is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite," Bachmann said. She added, "This wouldn't be tolerated if this was Michelle Obama. It shouldn't be tolerated if it's a conservative woman either."

Fallon has tweeted an apology to Bachmann, saying he was "so sorry about the intro mess." Bachmann said she hoped to speak with Fallon later Wednesday and wouldn't mind going on his show again.

But Bachmann expressed surprise that she's heard nothing from the TV network. She suggested that discipline for the show's Roots band was in order.

One of Bachmann's congressional colleagues, New York Democrat Nita Lowey, had called on NBC to apologize for its "insulting and inappropriate" treatment of its guest.

An NBC spokeswoman didn't immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press.

The Roots' bandleader, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, has said the song was a "tongue-in-cheek and spur-of-the-moment decision."

Bachmann, who is lagging in presidential polls, has spent the week promoting her new autobiography in national television interviews.

Giving thanks helps your psychological outlook (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Count your blessings this Thanksgiving. It's good for you.

While it seems pretty obvious that gratitude is a positive emotion, psychologists for decades rarely delved into the science of giving thanks. But in the last several years they have, learning in many experiments that it is one of humanity's most powerful emotions. It makes you happier and can change your attitude about life, like an emotional reset button.

Especially in hard times, like these.

Beyond proving that being grateful helps you, psychologists also are trying to figure out the brain chemistry behind gratitude and the best ways of showing it.

"Oprah was right," said University of Miami psychology professor Michael McCullough, who has studied people who are asked to be regularly thankful. "When you are stopping and counting your blessings, you are sort of hijacking your emotional system."

And he means hijacking it from out of a funk into a good place. A very good place. Research by McCullough and others finds that giving thanks is a potent emotion that feeds on itself, almost the equivalent of being victorious. It could be called a vicious circle, but it's anything but vicious.

He said psychologists used to underestimate the strength of simple gratitude: "It does make people happier ... It's that incredible feeling."

One of the reasons why gratitude works so well is that it connects us with others, McCullough said. That's why when you give thanks it should be more heartfelt and personal instead of a terse thank you note for a gift or a hastily run-through grace before dinner, psychologists say.

Chicago area psychologist and self-help book author Maryann Troiani said she starts getting clients on gratitude gradually, sometimes just by limiting their complaints to two whines a session. Then she eventually gets them to log good things that happened to them in gratitude journals: "Gratitude really changes your attitude and your outlook on life."

Gratitude journals or diaries, in which people list weekly or nightly what they are thankful for, are becoming regular therapy tools.

And in those journals, it is important to focus more on the people you are grateful for, said Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at the University of California, Davis. Concentrate on what life would be without the good things ? especially people such as spouses ? in your life and how you are grateful they are there, he said.

Grateful people "feel more alert, alive, interested, enthusiastic. They also feel more connected to others," said Emmons, who has written two books on the science of gratitude and often studies the effects of those gratitude diaries.

"Gratitude also serves as a stress buffer," Emmons said in an e-mail interview. "Grateful people are less likely to experience envy, anger, resentment, regret and other unpleasant states that produce stress."

Scientists are not just looking at the emotions behind gratitude but the nuts-and-bolts physiology as well.

Preliminary theories look at the brain chemistry and hormones in the blood and neurotransmitters in the brain that are connected to feelings of gratitude, Emmons said. And the left prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is also associated with positive emotions like love and compassion, seems to be a key spot, especially in Buddhist monks, Emmons said.

However it works in the brain, Emmons said there is little doubt that it works.

Emmons, who has conducted several studies on people from ages 12 to 80, including those with neuromuscular disease, asked volunteers to keep daily or weekly gratitude diaries. Another group listed hassles, and others just recorded random events. He noticed a significant and consistent difference. About three-quarters of the people studied who regularly counted their blessings scored higher in happiness tests and some even showed improvements in amounts of sleep and exercise.

Christopher Peterson of the University of Michigan studied different gratitude methods and found the biggest immediate improvement in happiness scores was among people who were given one week to write and deliver in person a letter of gratitude to someone who had been especially kind to them, but was never thanked. That emotional health boost was large, but it didn't last over the weeks and months to come.

Peterson also asked people to write down nightly three things that went well that day and why that went well. That took longer to show any difference in happiness scores over control groups, but after one month the results were significantly better and they stayed better through six months.

Peterson said it worked so well that he is adopted it in his daily life, writing from-the-heart thank you notes, logging his feelings of gratitude: "It was very beneficial for me. I was much more cheerful."

At the University of North Carolina, Sara Algoe studied the interaction between cancer patients and their support group, especially when acts of gratitude were made. Like Peterson, she saw the effects last well over a month and she saw the feedback cycle that McCullough described.

"It must be really powerful," Algoe said.

It has to be potent to combat gloom many may be feeling in such uncertain times.

There have been many Thanksgivings throughout history that might challenge society's ability to be grateful. The first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims came after about half of the Plymouth colony died in the first year. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in the United States when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it in 1863 during the Civil War, the deadliest war the country has ever known. And the holiday moved to the fourth Thursday in November during the tail end of the Great Depression.

Emmons actually encourages people to "think of your worst moments, your sorrows, your losses, your sadness and then remember that here you are, able to remember them. You got through the worst day of your life ... remember the bad things, then look to see where you are."

That grace amid difficulty motif may make this Thanksgiving especially meaningful, McCullough said.

"In order to be grateful for something, we have to remember that something good happened," Peterson said. "It's important to remind ourselves that the world doesn't always suck."

2nd boy admits shopping cart push that hurt woman (AP)

NEW YORK ? A 12-year-old boy admitted Wednesday that he and a friend shoved a shopping cart off a fourth-floor walkway at a shopping center, a prank that critically hurt a woman when it plunged onto her.

The boy pleaded guilty in Family Court to assault, as his now 13-year-old friend did last week. Both are in custody until court dates next month, when a judge is to decide their punishments.

Because of their ages, they could be ordered to spend up to 18 months in a juvenile facility, not jail, but their detention could be extended annually up to their 18th birthdays.

"Me and (the other boy) threw a shopping cart off the fourth story of the mall" Oct. 30, the 12-year-old told a judge Wednesday in a shy mumble, with his mother and lawyer by his side. Like his friend, he acknowledged knowing that people on the ground could get hurt.

The case drew attention nationwide. An editorial in The Augusta Chronicle in Georgia portrayed it as evidence that "at least one of society's wheels is completely off the rails."

The cart landed on Marion Salmon Hedges, a real estate broker and volunteer with several charity organizations. She had gone to a discount store at the shopping plaza, in gritty East Harlem, to get a load of Halloween candy to give away to the children who flocked to her block of Upper West Side brownstones from a range of neighborhoods, her friends and family have said.

Hedges, 47, was in a medically induced coma for a time. Her husband has said she will need months of rehabilitation.

The 12-year-old has a history of being suspended from school, said city Law Department lawyer Leah S. Schmelzer, who represented the government in the Family Court case. But his lawyer, Sandeep Kandhari, said the boy has never been in legal trouble before.

"He understands the gravity of this," Kandhari told Judge Susan Larabee. "He understands that he has to take responsibility for his actions, and he's prepared to do so."

The Associated Press generally doesn't report the names of juveniles charged with crimes.

Kandhari asked the judge to let the boy go home for a few hours on Thanksgiving to his close-knit family; his parents, though not a couple anymore, live in the same household, his mother told the judge. Larabee declined.

The lawyer and the boy's mother declined to comment as they left the courtroom.

Nokia Siemens to lay off 17,000 worldwide

Wireless equipment maker Nokia Siemens Networks will slash 17,000 jobs ? almost one-quarter of its work force ? in a move to cut annual costs by ?1 billion ($1.35 billion) by 2013, company officials said Wednesday.

The joint venture between Finland's Nokia Corp. and Siemens AG of Germany said it would focus on mobile broadband networks and services as it slims down with a view to becoming an independent company.

Nokia Siemens has struggled to make a profit amid stiff competition in the global market for network infrastructure ? the technology and services needed to run mobile and fixed-line networks.

"As we look towards the prospect of an independent future, we need to take action now to improve our profitability and cash generation," CEO Rajeev Suri said Wednesday.

Nokia Siemens in July dropped plans to sell part of its business to private equity firms and said it would take steps to improve its competitiveness as a standalone company.

Market watchers had speculated that Nokia would want to dispose of its ownership in the loss-making venture and focus on developing mobile phones in its new partnership with Microsoft Corp.

Though Nokia is losing market share to rivals, including Samsung and Apple's iPhone, it remains the world's biggest mobile phone maker.

The network joint venture, by contrast, is falling behind its competitors, and has shown annual operating losses since it started operations in April 2007.

Besides traditional competitors such as LM Ericsson of Sweden, Nokia Siemens is now facing strong challenges from Asian rivals such as China's Huawei and ZTE Corp, said analyst Phil Kendall of Strategy Analytics.

"The Chinese have shaken up the operational environment by originally selling cheap hardware and won business that way, but have now built up a credible reputation and become quite competent technology providers," Kendall said. "All of the big traditional Western infrastructure vendors have really had to work hard to fight off the threat."

Last year, Nokia Siemens acquired the majority of Motorola Corp.'s wireless operations for $1.2 billion in a major thrust to gain a stronger foothold worldwide and to gain access to top American wireless carriers and cable companies, including ATT, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp., which depend on technology provided by infrastructure suppliers.

The layoffs would cut Nokia Siemens' 74,000-strong work force by 23 percent. Suri described the cuts as regrettable but necessary. He didn't specify what kind of jobs would be slashed.

"We will continue to push network outsourcing, we will not focus so much on field maintenance deals," Suri said. "That will allow us to use our global delivery capabilities and do remote management from our centers in India and Portugal and transform those businesses to pick up and make money."

Nokia shares jumped on the news, but closed down 2 percent at ?4.09 ($5.48) on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

Based in Espoo, near Helsinki, Nokia Siemens has employees in 150 countries.

Stocks set for 6th losing day on Europe, China woes (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures were lower on Wednesday as worries about the euro zone crisis and weak data from China weighed on investor sentiment, putting the S&P 500 on track for a sixth day of losses.

World stocks hit their lowest in six weeks as weak demand in an auction for German benchmark bonds heightened fears the crisis would worsen. For details, see

Debt problems in Europe and the United States have pressured markets, and last week was the S&P's worst in two months. The index has fallen more than 5 percent in its current string of declines.

Chinese manufacturing shrank the most in 32 months in November, intensified concerns about a global economic slowdown. Crude oil fell 1.9 percent on fears of reduced demand from the world's No. 2 economy.

"The concerns about Europe continue to evolve, with people now looking at Germany, and this is all complicated by the poor manufacturing news out of China, which is concerning," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners LLC in New York.

S&P 500 futures fell 9.8 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures lost 91 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 18.5 points.

The S&P managed Tuesday to hold near 1,187, seen as the next technical support and representing the 61.8 percent retracement of the 2011 high to low. The index fell below the 1,200 mark last week.

"I think that after all the losses we've suffered the market is oversold, but the fact that we've fallen so far so fast suggests there could still be further room to drop," Pavlik said.

Trading volume is likely to be low on Wednesday, the day before the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, when U.S. markets are closed. That could amplify turbulence, which remains tied to Europe's volatility.

Deere & Co (DE.N) shares climbed 5.7 percent to $76 in premarket trading after quarterly earnings beat expectations and sales climbed 20 percent.

The U.S. Federal Reserve plans to run stress tests on six large U.S. banks, including Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) and Citigroup Inc (C.N), using a hypothetical market shock that includes a deteriorating European debt crisis as part of an annual review. Bank of America fell 1.9 percent to $5.27 in premarket trading.

Investors also awaited a new round of economic data. Initial jobless claims are seen rising by 2,000 to 390,000 in the latest week, while October durable goods orders are forecast to fall 1 percent. Both are scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. EST.

In addition, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final November consumer sentiment index will be released at 9:55 a.m. EST. Economists look for a reading of 64.5, compared with 64.2 in the preliminary November report.

Martinez wins the 'Dancing' mirrorball (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Actor J. R. Martinez scored a come-from-behind victory over Rob Kardashian Tuesday to win the 13th edition of ABC's hit competition "Dancing With the Stars."

The Iraq war veteran hoisted the mirrorball trophy with his professional partner, Karina Smirnoff.

Host Tom Bergeron called Martinez an inspiration to the audience.

The all-male finale was set up halfway through the final show when talk show host Ricki Lake was voted off, finishing third. Judges' scores combined with viewer votes determined the winner.

Judges didn't provide much extra guidance during the final competition, a samba that the dancers had to perform with little preparation time. The three judges gave both teams perfect 30 scores for their final dances.

"For one of you, that was your victory dance, but I think both of you are winners," judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. "That was a great way to end this season."

Martinez came into Tuesday's episode tied with Lake for second place. He reprised his jive routine from week two, and though he made a few mistakes, judge Len Goodman said, "You've got such a sparkling personality, you just light up this room."

Their victory brings Smirnoff her first mirrorball in 10 seasons. On Monday, she said winning would be ""a perfect ending to a perfect story."

"With everything we went through ... it's like this mirrorball would justify everything," she said. "No matter what happens, I feel like it has been such a fulfilling experience overall. But the mirrorball trophy would make it that much better. It's the truth."

Tuesday's two-hour finale also included music from Lady Antebellum and appearances by this season's former contestants: TV personalities Nancy Grace and Carson Kressley, reality star Kristin Cavallari, actors David Arquette and Elisabetta Canalis, singer Chynna Phillips, activist Chaz Bono, basketball player Metta World Peace and soccer star Hope Solo.

Kressley performed a cheeky routine to Madonna's "Vogue" that included him taking a spin with one male dancer and being dipped by another. The openly gay contestant, paired with pro dancer Ana Trebunskaya, was a fan favorite this season and has returned several times since he was eliminated from the competition to consult on fashion and bring his sense of silliness to the show.

Phillips took advantage of a second opportunity to try a "Mission Impossible" routine that she had muffed the first time around, resulting in her elimination.

After being voted off partway through Tuesday's show, Lake said she loved every minute of her experience.

"I've done something I really didn't think I could do," said the talk show host, who lost a significant amount of weight during the competition. "For someone who's a middle aged mom, I hope I made my children proud, my fiance and my family."

Statesiders aren't the only ones waiting on the Lumia line to launch. You can add China to the list of countries beholden to Espoo's "coming soon" promise. According to a report in Chinese magazine Global Entrepreneur, an unnamed Nokia exec has pinned down a release for the company's flagship WP 7 handsets, stating they'd likely hit sometime in April of 2012. True, that date may seem a bit far off, but the Finnish company's got quite a bit to tackle before next spring, as certain aspects of the Redmond-made OS require localization to keep in line with the government's media censorship. As for pricing, well, look for the phones to retail between 4888 to 4999 yuan (about $768 - $786) -- that's bank-breaking territory, indeed. But, if it's a bargain Windows Phone you're after, we hear those are available in spades.

Galaxy Nexus coming to Bell and Virgin Mobile Canada December 8th, pre-orders begin today

Time to start whoopin' and hollerin', Canada -- not only do you have a date with the Galaxy Nexus on December 8th, you can begin pre-ordering it on Bell and Virgin Mobile today. Getting your phone ordered early ensures that you can have the $160 handset (after a three-year commitment, of course) shipped out "as soon as it's available," but it doesn't necessarily guarantee your brand new treasure will show up on launch day. Bell's got a promo going on that we don't recall having seen before: a Twitter line-up. The idea is to sign up on the site on December 1st between 10am and 11am (EST), claim a spot in the virtual line and you'll be given a message to send on Twitter. Then, return to the site once an hour until 10pm and tweet out the latest message. If you remain in the top 100 when all is said and done, your Galaxy Nexus will be guaranteed to arrive on the 8th. 'Course, given the amount of interest circulating around the phone, it's probably best if you're on the site ready to get your Tweet at 9:59am. Check out the press release for the deets.

Introducing Social Media to Your Business

Social Media Landscape

Fact ? too many businesses still need to wake up and realize that social media is not ?one of these Internet fads? that will disappear.

Fact ? because of this mindset, too many businesses are potentially missing out on extra business that could mean the difference between staying afloat and going under. So why the problem?

One of the main reasons is that businesses ? whether it?s the CEO, top-tier management or otherwise ? are looking at social media as an individual medium, much like PR or marketing.

This is where the cracks start to appear. Social media benefits companies the most when it?s used as?part?of an?integrated?campaign.

Social media is also perfect for reaching out and connecting with your audience, as opposed to just selling them something. Sure, you?re still selling your brand or product ? but this time, it?s in an ?encouraging to ask questions? approach instead of ?this is us and you?ll like it? one.

Accepting that social media needs to be approached as an integrated strategy rather than a standalone campaign is the first step businesses need to take. After that, the job gets a little bit easier.

Define Your Audience

Just like any market or product, social media is made up of different audiences. As a business owner, you wouldn?t launch a new product onto a more traditional marketplace without some in-depth market research first ? don?t ignore this on social media.

Knowing your audience is key to succeeding in business social media. You need to know if your audience are participants or promoters. Why the need to differentiate? Simple -

  • Participants?are social media users that may use numerous social media sites and applications, but don?t really ?take part? in the medium. They?re like the visitors to your business website that may purchase something and then interact with you no further. There?s nothing wrong with this ? but as a method of expanding your brand, you may need to look elsewhere.
  • Promoters?are the users that like to share information ? whether it?s recommending something via Twitter or their blog, if they come across something they like they will pass that information on. This is where your use of social media can help build your name. Just remember that social media works both ways. Don?t try and cheat the system ? give back just as much (more, even) as you receive.

Have a Clear and Defined Goal

Another area where businesses are failing to adapt social media to their needs is that they don?t have a clear goal on what they want to achieve. Many hear the phrase ?social media? and immediately feel they need to be a part of this buzz, jump straight in without any forward thinking, and are then disappointed with the (lack of) results.

Ask yourself who you want to connect with and why, and then research the areas of social media that are most relevant to your needs. Demographics are one of the key points of knowledge for any campaign ? make sure you know where your demographics are playing online. A?social map?can help here.

Again, though, don?t try and play the system ? cheaters will soon be found out, and your brand can suffer irreparable damage if seen as merely a self-promotional company on social media.

Tools of the Trade

Once you have your audience and your goal set out, you need to use the tools that will help you the most. There are numerous available, and this is where building your social media connections can help, by advising what ones they use and what results they achieve.

Some of the best free examples of business tools include?Monitter?(which allows you a view on Twitter discussions of keywords);?Google Alerts?(giving you insight into what?s being said about you); and?Social Mention?(letting you gauge social reactions and reach to your topic or keywords and allowing you to jump in on conversations elsewhere).

Getting into social media shouldn?t be a hard decision for businesses to make ? it?s either right for you or it isn?t. Social media is a long-term strategy, not? a short-term fire sale.

Understand that, and you begin to understand social media.

California unemployment rate falls to 11.7 percent

SACRAMENTO ? California?s unemployment rate fell slightly to 11.7 percent in October from 11.9 percent a month earlier as the state added nearly 26,000 jobs in areas including professional and business services, education and health services, the state Employment Development Department said Friday.

The job gain is remarkable in light of the fact that the United States added a total of 80,000 jobs in the same period, said Michael Bernick, a former director of EDD who is now a fellow at the Milken Institute.

?This is one of the best job numbers, best job months we?ve seen in the past four years,? Bernick said. ?On the other hand, it?s still an economy that?s going to have a number of fits and starts. We still have a long way to go to make up those 1.4 million payroll jobs lost between 2008 and 2010, and we still have over 2 million Californians unemployed.?

California?s unemployment rate has hovered around 12 percent for months and has been stuck above 11 percent since 2009. The state?s jobless rate is the second highest in the nation, behind Nevada, which had a rate of 13.4 percent in September, the most recent data available.

California?s new payroll jobs were spread among various sectors of the economy, including some in the hard-hit construction field, which is a positive sign, Bernick said.

Steve Levy, an economist with the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy in Palo Alto, said the state?s urban coastal regions are leading the economic comeback, benefiting from the growth in technology, trade and tourism.

Job growth has also returned to the Inland Empire, which added 15,200 jobs in the last year, Levy said.

In October 2010, California?s unemployment rate was 12.5 percent. The state has added 192,000 jobs since January.

The national unemployment rate also dropped slightly to 9 percent in October.

About 495,000 people continue to receive unemployment insurance benefits in California, and nearly 69,000 new claims were received in October, the Employment Development Department said.

Eyeing Deal Flow, Bain Capital Ventures Heads West; Opens Silicon Valley Office

Bain Ventures, the Boston-based venture capital arm of private equity firm of Bain Capital, has recently opened a Palo Alto office, the firm's first presence on the West Coast. The new office is being led by Bain partner (and former Trilogy alum) Ajay Agarwal. "We needed to be part of the ecosystem out here, and we want to build a business out here for the long term," he explains. Agarwal says that the Palo Alto office will focus on sourcing Series A opportunities and growth capital for startups, in the range of $3 to $5 million. The fund will be investing out of Bain's $525 million fund.

32 homes lost to Reno fire; scores saved

Arcing power lines likely caused the wind-fueled wild fire that destroyed 32 homes and damaged at least 40 more, Reno fire investigators said Saturday.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said it's a miracle scores more weren't lost.

The governor said after a helicopter tour of the area that while the loss of homes was a tragedy, the 400 firefighters on the lines are heroes for saving more than 4,000 houses that could have burned.

The 2,000-acre fire is now 65 percent contained, Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said at a morning press conference. It could be 90 percent contained or better by Sunday, he said.

The nearly 10,000 people who were evacuated on Friday were given permission to start returning to their homes.

Hernandez said there's no official cause yet, but all signs point to the power lines. He said investigators ruled out the possibility that teenage partiers or a homeless campfire was to blame.

"It's not uncommon to have power lines arcing and that kind of thing when you have 50, 60 mph winds," Hernandez said.

He said 50 fire engines worked on the fire overnight and 140 firefighters were on the job Saturday morning.

The fire was blamed for the death of a 74-year-old man who had a heart attack while trying to flee. It also left a firefighter first- and second-degree burns and sent 16 people to hospitals, many for smoke inhalation.

At least 400 firefighters from as far as 260 miles away flocked to Reno early Friday as multiple fires roared from the Sierra Nevada foothills in northwestern Nevada and spread to the valley floor.

PhotoBlog: Residents return home to view fire damage

The wind grounded firefighting helicopters and made it difficult for firefighters to approach Caughlin Ranch, the affluent subdivision bordering pine-forested hills where the fire likely began after 12:30 a.m. It also helped the fire spread from 400 acres to more than 3 square miles.

The gusts were comparable to the Santa Ana winds that often aggravate and spread wildfires in the hills surrounding Los Angeles, officials said.

"The wind is horrific," said Reno spokeswoman Michele Anderson. "We just watched a semi nearly blow over on the freeway."

Hernandez said residents ran from their homes dressed in pajamas, frantically trying to grab as many possessions as possible. One elderly man dressed in his underwear ran out with a blanket wrapped around his body.

Dick Hecht said that when he escaped from his home with his wife, "the whole mountain was on fire," and it was so windy he could barely stand.

"It was like a tornado," he said.

The couple tried to return to their home before morning, but they were turned back by high winds and erupting flames. As they made their way back down the mountain roads, flames burned less than 40 yards from their vehicle.

(AP) ? They've been hacked and libeled, stalked and slandered. Now the public figures whose personal lives have long offered grist for Britain's news mill have been given a rare chance to confront their tabloid tormentors.

Film star Hugh Grant, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, and the father of missing girl Madeleine McCann are among those due to testify over the next week at the U.K. inquiry into media ethics ? a judicial body that could recommend sweeping changes to the way Britons get their news.

The nationally televised inquiry would give many of those in the public eye an unprecedented chance to challenge those who write about them, said Cary Cooper, a professor at northern England's Lancaster University and the author of "Public Faces, Private Lives."

"This is the first time the celebrities have been able to strike back," Cooper said. "I think it will have an impact, and the media might ? for a while at least ? pull away."

Speaking ahead of the testimony, victims' lawyer David Sherborne told the inquiry multiple tales of shattered privacy, broken lives and even suicides stemming from relentless media intrusion.

"When people talk of public interest in exposing the private lives of well-known people or those close to them, this is the real, brutally real impact which this kind of journalism has," Sherborne said.

Britain's media ethics probe was set up in the wake of the scandal over phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World, which was shut in July after it became clear that the tabloid had systematically broken the law. Most horrific was the news that the tabloid had broken into the phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler in its search for scoops.

Cooper acknowledged that celebrities like Grant or actress Sienna Miller ? another star due to give evidence ? have struggled to get much in the way of public sympathy even when it was shown that their privacy had been invaded. But he said their appearance alongside crime victims such as Bob and Sally Dowler or Gerry McCann could mark a shift in attitudes.

"They're going to get hit worse by the Milly Dowler family and witnesses of that ilk," he said.

Sherborne, in a two-and-half-hour-long presentation Wednesday, promised to make journalists squirm.

Most powerful among his accusations was the suggestion that media coverage had driven some celebrities' family members to the brink of suicide ? or beyond.

Sherborne said that former Formula One racing boss Max Mosley believed that the suicide of his 39-year-old son Alexander could also be at least in part attributed to "the very public humiliation" dealt to his father by the News of the World's expose of his sexual shenanigans.

He went on to outline the case of soccer player Garry Flitcroft, whose life was turned upside down by a newspaper's revelation that he'd cheated on his wife. Flitcroft's children were teased in school, his family was tracked by helicopter and his ailing father fell into a deepening depression before taking his own life, the lawyer said.

Another case involved Charlotte Church, the British singer who shot to stardom as a teenager. Sherborne said she'd been subjected to waves of harassment. Photographers chased her in cars, tried to take pictures up her skirt and cut holes in bushes to install secret cameras. So hungry was the press for scoops about her private life that journalists revealed she was pregnant before she had even told her parents.

Worse still was the News of the World's expose of her father's affair in 2005. Sherborne said that Church's mother had attempted suicide shortly before the story ran, but that rather than hold back, "the newspaper approached her mother directly and persuaded her to give them an exclusive, despite her fragile condition, as part of a Faustian pact that in return they would not run another lurid follow-up story about her husband's affair."

Others testifying over the next seven days include comic actor Steve Coogan, whose romantic exploits have been exhaustively documented, and broadcaster Anne Diamond, who was targeted by Murdoch's press after she challenged the mogul about his ethics.

Chris Jeffries, who was wrongly implicated in the murder of his tenant, is also due to give evidence, along with soccer star Paul Gascoigne's ex-wife Sheryl; human rights activist Jane Winter; former army intelligence officer Ian Hurst; and Margaret Watson, whose teenage daughter Diane was stabbed to death in 1991.

UFC 139 video: Faber, Bowles and Benavidez agree Cruz is good, but far from scary or unbeatable

Dominick Cruz has beaten three guys in attendance at today's UFC 139 prefight press conference, but that doesn't mean any of them would hesitate for a second if offered another shot at the 135-pound title.

All three respect Cruz, but don't view him as a dangerous guy.

"I wasn't having too much trouble hitting him. I hit him plenty of times. I just wasn't throwing as many punches," Faber said. "But he's not scary. I'll fight him any day. Every day, all day."

Faber lost to Cruz back at UFC 132. The fight was razor thin although the judges gave the unanimous decision to Cruz, 50-45, 49-46 and 48-47.

FightMetric had Cruz outlanding Faber 97-58. He also attempted 246 strikes compared to 181 by Faber. Cruz was 4-of-13 on takedowns as well. Faber explained today that he has to do a better job of playing to the judges, who he's not exactly fond of.

"I learned when you're doing P.R. and you're talking a really large group that isn't really familiar with mixed martial arts ... they're always saying 'hey, explain it like you're talking with kindergarteners who've never seen the sport before. I think i need to do that with judges," joked Faber. "I want to paint a picture that I'm winning this fight for someone who doesn't know what they're doing."

Faber knows Cruz is a good points fighter and he'll have to adjust his game if he's going to take out the champ the next time they meet.

"I have to be cognizant of the fact that I'm playing to a couple of people who's opinions matter. I don't like fighting like that, but sometimes you have to," said Faber.

Brian Bowles, Faber's opponent on Saturday night agreed that Cruz is good, but because he's awkward and essentially does everything you're not supposed to when striking.

Joe Benavidez, who lost to Cruz two times, said you really have to mix up the striking with some takedowns to win over the judges when you face the champ.

Barnes makes the case for Newt (Politico)

Fred Barnes, the Weekly Standard executive editor who - as JMart noted - presaged the John McCain comeback in 2007, makes the case for why Newt Gingrich's current primary boom is to be taken seriously, despite the frequent discussion of the former House Speaker's "baggage:"

Gingrich probably has at least as good a chance of getting a pass on his various transgressions in 2012 as Reagan, Schwarzenegger, and Clinton did. If 2012 were an ordinary election year, Gingrich would be doomed by his gaffes, three marriages, and fleeting alliances with Hillary Clinton on health care and Nancy Pelosi on global warming. But 2012 is different. Republicans are fixated on defeating President Obama. They?re obsessed. They think about little else. And if that means choosing a candidate with a lurid past and a penchant for self-destruction to beat Obama, Republicans are likely to swallow hard and nominate Gingrich.

In their hearts, Republicans have always wanted a candidate who is bold and tough, and Gingrich is. They?re not sure about Mitt Romney, who is cautious, conventional, and sounds more conciliatory than Gingrich. There?s a reason Romney?s support has been stuck for months at roughly a quarter of the Republican electorate. His blandness explains it. Gingrich is anything but bland.

To rally behind Gingrich, Republicans wouldn?t have to forgive his past sins, just treat them as irrelevant. They already talk about how sweet it would be to see Gingrich crush Obama in presidential debates. They don?t see Romney that way.

And yet, Barnes notes, much of that depends on whether it's "good Newt" or "bad Newt" who shows up in the coming weeks, a point Jonathan and John Harris made earlier this week:

But Romney has two important traits Gingrich lacks: carefulness and self-discipline. He doesn?t shoot off his mouth recklessly, as Gingrich often has. In May, the former House speaker practically blew up his campaign by attacking Representative Paul Ryan?s Medicare reform plan as ?right-wing social engineering.? He later apologized.

This is a point we made last night as Gingrich talked about his need to survive scandal vetting in order to be taken seriously - at least in the primary, the present may be more problematic for the historically undisciplined Gingrich.
