Tim Cook On Apple TV: ?We?re Going To Keep Pulling The String?

Apple CEO Tim Cook talked about the company's TV plans tonight at the D10 conference. His comments were all pretty vague, but if nothing else, he hinted strongly that Apple does in fact have plans for future TV products. When interviewers Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher pressed Cook on whether he thinks the current Apple TV product is good enough, he said, "We're going to keep pulling this string and see where it takes us." Mossberg then suggested that the current version of Apple TV doesn't solve all of the problems with TV watching, to which Cook replied, "I agree" ? but he didn't want to talk about it further. Of course, a full-fledged Apple TV (one that includes an actual TV) has been rumored for a long time now, and this isn't the first time the company's executives have suggested that big plans in this area ? but if nothing else, Cook's comments should chase any lingering doubts away.

Fantasizing about your dream vacation could lead to poor decision-making

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? Summer vacation time is upon us. If you have been saving up for your dream vacation for years, you may want to make sure your dream spot is still the best place to go. A new study has found that when we fantasize about such trips before they are possible, we tend to overlook the negatives -- thus influencing our decision-making down the line.

"We were interested in the effects of positive fantasies -- what happens when people imagine an idealized, best-case-scenario version of the future, compared to when they imagine a less idealized version," says Heather Barry Kappes of New York University, co-author of the study published online this week in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. "This is one of the first papers to examine selective information acquisition at this early stage, before people are seriously considering a possibility."

Say, for example, that you would like to take a trip to Australia this year but think you are very unlikely to do so -- you have no more vacation time left, cannot afford it, or would rather save up for a new car. But you still daydream about how nice it would be to see the Australian Outback and lie on the white sand beaches, perhaps without thinking about the long plane ride there or the poisonous animals. Those daydreams, Kappes says, have powerful effects.

To test those effects, Kappes and co-author Gabriele Oettingen asked people to imagine a particular future about one of three topics: wearing glamorous high-heeled shoes, making money in the stock market, or taking a vacation. To induce positive fantasies for each topic, the study participants were prompted to think about how great it would be to do each activity. In the control condition, participants also imagined experiencing the future, but were prompted to think about the negatives as well, with questions like "Would it really be so great?" In both conditions, participants wrote down what they were thinking, for the researchers to ensure they were engaged in the imagery.

After that exercise, the researchers offered the participants a choice of different types of information. For example, participants could browse a website describing the positive and negative health consequences of wearing high heels, and researchers noted how much more time they spent reading about positive versus negative consequences. Or, they could choose which of five (fictitious) tripadvisor.com reviews they wanted to read, and researchers recorded whether they chose one that was more pro-trip (i.e., five stars) or con-trip (i.e., one star).

Kappes' team found that for each topic, imagining the idealized version made people prefer to learn about the pros rather than the cons of the future event. "These effects are pronounced when people are not seriously considering pursuing a given future," Kappes says.

The work has important implications for even the most deliberate of decision-makers. "When people are seriously considering implementing a decision like taking a trip, they often engage in careful deliberations about the pros versus cons," Kappes says. "Our work suggests that before getting to this point, positive fantasies might lead people to acquire biased information -- to learn more about the pros rather than the cons. Thus, even if people deliberate very carefully on the information they've acquired, they could still make poor decisions."

People need to be aware of these effects to ensure that they acquire balanced information before it is time to make a decision, she says. The study also contributes to a larger body of research about the powerful consequences of mental imagery -- and shows that positive thinking may not always be best. "Although there are benefits to imagining a positive future, there are also drawbacks, and it's important to recognize them in order to most effectively pursue our goals."

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Isaac Lamb acknowledges that his five-minute, block-long choreographed build-up to a marriage proposal has upped the stakes for everyone who follows.

"Guys, I'm sorry," he said on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday. "That wasn't my intention."

The Portland-area thespian's creative proposal last week to girlfriend Amy Frankel featured about 60 people dancing on a small street near his parents' home. Video of the performance has gone viral, notching more than 6 million YouTube hits so far.

Lamb is pitching it as the world's first lip-synched proposal, and there don't appear to be any challengers.

The video begins with Lamb's brother putting headphones over Frankel's ears as she sits facing out the back of an SUV, her legs dangling over the rear bumper.

"This song tends to exemplify you and Isaac's relationship to me," the brother tells her, and there begins Bruno Mars' sugar-pop, up-tempo ballad "Marry You."

The car starts moving and two of the couple's friends roll into the frame, then a few more. It was nothing that seemed too out of the ordinary, Frankel told NBC's "Today." She and Lamb are actors and are used to elaborate stunts.

Frankel thought: "Oh, they're doing something with Isaac's family," she told the show. "There's seven of them. This is so sweet."

A second camera ? the one that gives the video its emotional heft ? is perched above Frankel's face, capturing her reaction. It shows her as she crosses her hands on her chest, shakes her head, giggles and swoons.

The proposal is elaborate but not expensive, choreographed but not constrained. In this city where the television show "Portlandia" suggested young people go to retire, most of the dancers in the video look like they fell off the bus from central casting headed for its set.

For all the pageantry, though, the proposal itself was pretty simple.

"You have already given me a lifetime of happiness," Lamb tells Frankel when the music stops. "Will you let me spend the rest of my life trying to give you the same? Will you marry me?"

She nods, and they kiss as a man in the background wearing a marching-band costume wipes away a tear.

Lamb's proposal is not the first wedding-themed video to go viral. Jill and Kevin's wedding entrance dance from 2009 set the standard for matrimonial cool and ? at 75 million online views ? spawned countless imitators.

The song Lamb picked, on its face, sounds ideal ? "Marry You" is a kind of proposal. Except its lyrics say: "It's a beautiful night. We're looking for something dumb to do." And they round out with: "Who cares if we're trashed, got a pocket full of cash we can blow. Shots of Patron, and it's on."

Baseball stars in the US have clubbed together to donate $310,000 to help with the tsunami and earthquake relief effort in Japan.

The funds are to be used to expand a mobile Community Cafe that acts as a cultural hub and brings a sense of pride back to areas that were devastated in the March 11th twin disaster last year.

The grant, which has been provided by the Major League Baseball (MLB) Players Trust, has been donated to the Hands on Tokyo non-profit organisations.

Points of Light, an affiliate of the charity, will use the funds to grow its Community Cafe scheme ? a project which helps bring people living in temporary accommodation after losing their homes together to connect with others, share their experiences and inspire positive action.

"By building community, we are building hope and helping residents from these communities work together to rebuild their homes and their infrastructure," explained Points of Light chief executive Michelle Nunn.

"This generous donation allows Points of Light and Hands On Tokyo to expand our efforts to include training and deploying volunteers and prioritising community rebuilding needs that can be accomplished by volunteers."

The donation brings the total gifted by MLB players to more than $900,000 following an earlier grant of $575,000 that was used to fund a range of relief and recovery programmes.

This included a gift of baseball equipment to 32 youth teams from Ishinomaki, in the Miyagi Prefecture.

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Takashi Saito said that he was honoured to join other Major League players to help return a sense of pride to his native Miyagi.

He said that the effects of the tsunami continue to be felt across parts of Japan and have challenged the spirit of thousands of people, but projects such as the Community Cafe "will help the proud people living in and around north-eastern Japan reconnect with their roots".

If you are like me and have never met a basket of French fries you did not like, join me for a drink. I know it sounds crazy, but exercise and alcohol are a great mix. After a night at the bar, I discovered boozercise, and I want to share the benefits with you.

Quick disclaimer: I am not a licensed or unlicensed health or fitness professional. What I am is a twenty-something looking to shed a few pounds while remaining a regular at my favorite bar. I do not condone having more than one or two drinks before or during your workout. I also suggest avoiding heavy machinery, including cars, during and after boozercise.

Now on to the work-out.

Exercise 1: Beerlates (Beer plus Pilates)

Calories burned an hour: Between 270 for beginner and 500 for advanced workouts.

I was wondering if the same applies to a relationship.
Being heterosexual myself, I?ve been brought to my knees emotionally by a female partner. I?ve been made very angry in heated arguments? But I?d never dream of hitting my partner; even if they cheated on me.

However, I wonder how I would react if I was homosexual and my partner deeply hurt me, say after cheating on me. I think I?d be far more likely to express my anger physically.

So yes, as the question says? Is domestic violence more common in same sex relationships?

May I also note that I am not an aggressive person.
