Egypt?s envoy to Lebanon: Cairo will work with Hezbollah, ?a real political and military force?

Egypt?s ambassador to Lebanon said his country will pursue a relationship with Hezbollah, a ?real political and military force,? The Daily Star reported Saturday. If implemented, the decision would constitute a dramatic policy shift from that of the former Hosni Mubarak administration.

Egypt?s relations with Hezbollah, a Shi?ite Islamic group that is considered a terror organization by the United States, have been strained, in large part, by Cairo?s 1979 peace accord with Israel. The ambassador?s comments on a possible Hezbollah-Egyptian rapprochement came on the heels of the passage of the controversial Muslim Brotherhood-backed constitution by President Mohammed Morsi last week.

Speaking from his office in Beirut, Ashraf Hamdy told the Lebanese news source that Egypt?s new foreign policy objectives include the need to explore fresh modes of communications, which means keeping regional contacts ?tight,? even with its enemies.

?You cannot discuss politics in Lebanon without having a relationship with Hezbollah. It is a real force on the ground. It has a big political and military influence in Lebanon,? the ambassador said.

?We are stretching our hand out in the proper, balanced way to all regional powers, but of course, we will continue to develop our foreign policy according to our interests,? he told the paper.

He called the role of Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, that of a real regional power and a ?doer? on the scene, particularly through its mediation efforts and intrinsic soft power.

?In discussions we said we want Hezbollah to remain as a political force in Lebanon acting in the interests of the Lebanese first and not others,? Hamdy continued. ?Resistance in the sense of defending Lebanese territory ? That?s their primary role. We ? think that as a resistance movement they have done a good job defending Lebanese territory, and trying to regain land occupied by Israel is legal and legitimate.?

He warned, however, of mixing the ?legitimate? goals of resistance with the Lebanese political process ? something Egypt and other Arab countries wouldn?t welcome, he said. Elections and a democratic process are imperative for Lebanon, he added.

Touching on Hezbollah?s support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, Hamdy stated: ?We want to keep all the parties in Lebanon away from what is happening in Syria. Not only Hezbollah.? He claimed that Western-style of democracy may not be appropriate for Syria at this moment, but said Egypt favored a political solution to the civil war ? one that doesn?t include Assad.

Hamdy served as ambassador to Syria under Mubarak before starting his post as top envoy to Beirut in 2010.

Two Arrested Over Christmas Eve Murder Of Church Organist Alan Greaves

Two men were being questioned on Saturday night about the murder of church organist Alan Greaves, who was attacked on his way to midnight mass on Christmas Eve.

Mr Greaves, 68, was just yards from his church in High Green, Sheffield, when he was badly beaten.

He was discovered by a member of the public and taken to hospital but died from his injuries on Thursday night.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A man in his 20s and a man in his 40s, both from Sheffield, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in custody helping police.

"Officers are searching a number of properties in the area and there has been a high-visibility police presence in High Green today."

Detectives are still appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information about the murder.

Mr Greaves, a grandfather and father-of-four, died after sustaining serious head injuries at about 11.15pm on Christmas Eve after leaving his home to go to St Saviour's Church.

Police are treating his death as murder and have said the motive for the attack is unclear.

His widow, church community worker Maureen Greaves, 63, told The Sun last night: "There was no motive.

"We are devastated. It is just not what you expect, somebody to walk down the street and get murdered - and at this time of year as well, it's just dreadful."

Canon Simon Bessant, from St Saviour's, described Mr Greaves as a "good man" who fell victim to an evil act.

He said: "He was a gentle soul. He wasn't foolish - he would have handled the situation as best as anyone would, but we don't know what he encountered."

The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, has sent a message to every parish in his diocese asking for prayers for Mr Greaves, his widow and their family.

In it, Dr Croft said: "Alan Greaves died on Thursday night following injuries received in an attack on Christmas Eve as he was on his way to church.

"He was a Reader and organist at St Saviour's Mortomley and High Green in Sheffield.

"He was married to Maureen, a Church Army Evangelist, and both Alan and Maureen were widely involved in serving their local community for many years. They have four grown up children.

"Please would you hold Alan's family and the church family at High Green, with Simon Bessant the Vicar and the wider family of Church Army, in your prayers in the coming days and especially this Sunday morning.

"I plan to be with the congregation at High Green on Sunday morning."

This will most likely be the last proper survey for 2012, a look by MMD, Mobile Marketing Data Laboratory, at mobile carrier satisfaction levels, as reported by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Few demographics were given, just that on the 18th and 19th of December 2012 664 members of the MMD monitor group between the ages of 20 and 59 and who owned a smartphone from either docomo, au or SoftBank completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The results were listed alongside the results of a similar survey from May 2012.

Note that docomo only has seen a significant drop in satisfaction with signal strength and talk area; perhaps one reason is that there has been a number of network outages over the summer, and I still see occassional dropping out of my 3G signal in and around train stations at rush hour.

Research results

Note that the following question was most likely asked as describing how satisified one was, perhaps ?Satisified?, ?Somewhat Satisfied?, ?Can?t say/no answer?, ?Somewhat dissatisfied?, and ?Dissatisfied?. The two percentages for the positive answers were then added together to give the following charts.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says "the hour for immediate action is here" on a deal to avert the fiscal cliff.

The president says he remains "optimistic" that an agreement can be reached in Congress before a looming year-end deadline to avoid tax increases and spending cuts.

If Congress can't reach a deal, the president says Congress should allow a vote on a basic package that would preserve tax cuts for middle-class Americans while extending unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless and working toward a foundation for a broader deal.

The president says an hourlong meeting Friday with congressional leaders was "good and constructive."

Senate leaders say they hope to reach a compromise that could be presented to lawmakers by Sunday, little more than 24 hours before the deadline.

MSF warns Kenya not to send more refugees to stricken camp

LONDON (Reuters) - Conditions in a camp for Somali refugees in Kenya are deplorable and a government plan to send in thousands more would pose a major risk to health, medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Friday.

Kenya has more than half a million refugees from Somalia, which has lacked an effective central government since the outbreak of civil war in 1991.

A series of bombings, shootings and hand-grenade attacks blamed on Somali militants prompted the government on December 18 to stop registering asylum seekers and refugees in urban areas.

A Kenyan official said more than 100,000 refugees must now head to the remote Dadaab camp in the country's remote north. Amnesty International said the order breached international law.

Dadaab camp was set up 20 years ago and already houses four times the population it was built for. Hunger and disease outbreaks are common.

MSF says its inhabitants suffer from overcrowding and poor sanitation that recent floods had worsened.

"The assistance provided here in Dadaab is already completely overstretched and is not meeting the current needs," said Elena Velilla, MSF's head of mission in Kenya.

In the last month, the number of children admitted to Dadaab's hospital for severe acute malnutrition has doubled to around 300, MSF said. Sixty-three of those were taken to intensive care this week after developing serious complications.

Most of the sick are also suffering from acute watery diarrhea or severe respiratory tract infections, MSF said.

Survey finds increase in e-reading, drop in paper

The tastes of the reading public are turning digital.

A Pew Internet Research Center survey released Thursday found that the percentage of Americans aged 16 and older who read an e-book grew from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year. Readers of traditional books dropped from 72 percent to 67 percent. Overall, those reading books of any kind dropped from 78 percent to 75 percent, a shift Pew called statistically insignificant.

Those owning an e-book device or tablet jumped from 18 percent to 33 percent, with much of that increase coming from last year's holiday season, when millions received Kindles, Nooks and other e-readers as gifts.

Awareness that libraries offer digital texts grew from 24 percent to 31 percent.

The telephone survey of 2,252 people aged 16 and older was conducted from Oct. 15 to Nov. 10. It has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

EU charges Samsung with abusing vital telecoms patent

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission charged Samsung Electronics on Friday with abusing its dominant position in seeking to bar rival Apple from using a patent deemed essential to mobile phone use.

The Commission sent a "statement of objections" to the South Korean group, with its preliminary view that Samsung was not acting fairly.

"Intellectual property rights are an important cornerstone of the single market. However, such rights should not be misused when they are essential to implement industry standards, which bring huge benefits to businesses and consumers alike," Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in statement.

Apple and Samsung, the world's top two smartphone makers, are locked in patent disputes in at least 10 countries as they vie to dominate the lucrative mobile market and win over customers with their latest gadgets.

The filing of competition objections is the latest step in the Commission's investigation. After notifying Samsung in writing, the company will have a chance to reply and request a hearing before regulators.

If the Commission then concludes that the firm has violated the rules, it could impose a fine of up to 10 percent of the electronics firm's total annual turnover.

Technology companies are increasingly turning to the European Commission as the European Union's competition authority, to resolve their disputes. The Commission is also investigating Google and Microsoft.

In the case of Samsung, its standard-essential patents (SEPs) relate to the EU's 3G UMTS standard. When this was adopted in Europe, Samsung committed to license the patents fairly to competitors, the Commission said.

However, it began seeking an injunction in 2011 in various EU member states against Apple's use of these patents. The Commission opened its investigation in January 2012.

Samsung said it was studying the Commission's statement. It said it would cooperate fully and "firmly defend ourselves against any misconceived allegations".

"Samsung is confident that, in due course, the Commission will conclude that we have acted in compliance with European Union competition laws."

Christianity teaches that you cannot do it on your own. Only with God can you be right. The believer does not belong to himself. He is a means to an ends. This is the degeneration of the self, and of personal strength. It is the lie that you cannot achieve without the presence of an almighty being, that you cannot escape addiction without a surrogate addiction to a higher power, that a human is not valuable purely of themselves.

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own."
1 Corinthians 6:19

"This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him."
1 John 4:9

The Christian is urged to not be a supple and living vital body, but to treat the body as nothing but a house for a religious idea. Degeneration of the self easily turns to degeneration of the body:

"Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."
Galatians 5:24

Many religions denigrate the body, in preference for an idea called "spirit." This is in fact the worst excess of the brain, thinking that it can escape the body, but a human is an embodied organism; we cannot escape the body, and the sensation of having a body. The body dictates our sense of space and pervades our metaphors. To deny it is to deny ourselves.

What does Jesus say about this spirit? Blessed are those who are poor in it! (Matthew 5:3)

Those in a state of spiritual poverty, the empty, those without hope... shall inherit the kingdom of heaven.

Even this spirit is degenerate! Those who are spiritually healthy are not blessed, but those who are suffering in spirit.

Jesus also teaches that the meek are blessed. The bold and the uninhibited will not inherit the Earth. Not those who can speak their minds. Only the enfeebled.

Jesus has more to say on inhibition. Woe to anyone who is not inhibited enough!

"But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."
Matthew 5:28

The Christ teaches a degeneration of the natural sexual impulse. The vitality of sex is negated. And it is better that your physical powers be degraded, to the extent that your body be mutilated, than for you to feel this natural impulse!

This idea that finds it first expression in the fable of conception without sex is fully realised in horrible life-hating goriness in Matthew 5:28.

If you have any vitality left, you are not to utilize it:

"But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
Matthew 5:39

You should act as if you are powerless. A virtue that we admire greatly, that finds expression in nearly every film we watch or book we read, resistance against evil, which we call heroism, is according to the Christ a vice. Jesus would have us put out bunting for the Nazis and welcome them in to the Whitehouse.

This passivity, this assumed powerlessness, is not enough. A believer must regress to childhood. A degeneration of all adult vitality, to the enfeebled state.

"And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me."
Matthew 18:3

The faithful should,

"Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good"
1 Peter 2:2-3

Even more so than babies, there is no real milk but the idea of milk!

Christianity wants nothing less than the negation of wisdom and learning:

"I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children."
Matthew 11:25

Only a degenerate philosophy could offer its truth only to children and deny it to the educated.

Simply subscription to this philosophy guarantees knowledge of truth and falsehood! No need for reason:

"We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood."

Thus Christianity promotes the degeneration of our reasoning powers. This leads in turn to degeneration of the will, the acceptance of slavery. Romans 6:15-22 espouses that all is slavery, and the only hope is slavery to God. See also 1 Peter 2:16.

As childlike slaves, we can never be fully responsible for our actions.

"As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do?this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it"
Romans 7:17-20

Rather than to the strength to own his own actions, the believer is directed to his own weakness. He is told, sin can be taken from you: the consequences of your actions can be escaped from. In reality your actions are set in history and reverberate inexorably through the present towards the future. But the believer is divorced from his actions. Sin made him do it. He is told he has hope of being washed clean of his own actions. This is the degeneration of responsibility.

In fact the believer is encouraged not just to disown his own actions, but to disown everything. Family, possessions, the world itself are to be given up. Jesus is the ultimate embodiment of divorce from the world. To the perceptive Nietzsche,

"in [Jesus'] sight everything else, the whole of reality, all nature, even language, has significance only as sign, as allegory."[1]

This is the degeneration of our vital relationship with the world.

"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world?the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life?comes not from the Father but from the world."
1 John 2:15-16

For Paul, the ultimate degeneration, the negation of everything:

"But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things?and the things that are not?to nullify the things that are.?
1 Corinthians 1:27-28

The Christianity of the NT is a philosophy that turns everything on its head, so that the weak and the foolish and the despised are the things of virtue, and ultimately everything is nullified.

Prediction: Black conservative senator will help GOP's cause

A conservative political scientist professor says the appointment of Congressman Tim Scott to replace Jim DeMint in the Senate should benefit two other South Carolina Republicans who are expected to face tough re-election battles in 2014.

Tim Scott is a conservative black?Republican -- a resource that the GOP will undoubtedly utilize in the next two years in an effort to overcome accusations by Democrats that it is a party of "angry white men." ( See earlier article)

Dr. Charles W. Dunn is the distinguished professor of government at Regent University and taught at South Carolina's Clemson University for more than a quarter of a century.

"This will mean a Republican from the heart of the old South, a black member of the Senate," he says of Scott. "That is of great significance to the nation."

Dunn believes Scott is going to help the 2014 reelection efforts of fellow South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, and of the person who appointed him to his Senate seat, Governor Nikki Haley.? ?

"Senator Graham, who has some problems with the base of the party in South Carolina, will find this choice helpful," Dunn tells OneNewsNow. "And Governor Haley, who has also had some problems, will find this choice helpful."

Dunn believes Scott is so popular that he will get some support from the heavily black Democratic base in The Palmetto State.

Samsung Galaxy Grand goes large, but without the resolution to match

Samsung has taken the wraps off the Galaxy Grand, a smartphone with a giant five-inch screen but a low resolution usually found on smaller handsets.

The Android 'Jelly Bean' 4.1.2-toting Galaxy Grand was revealed on Tuesday in a blog post, in which Samsung confirmed a device previously known from FCC filings as the 'Baffin'.

The Galaxy Grand has WVGA resolution, providing 480 x 800 pixels. This is a common resolution for devices with four-inch screens, but phones with larger screens, such as Samsung's flagship Galaxy S3, tend to offer resolutions more in the region of 720 x 1280 pixels. This means the Galaxy Grand will have a very low pixel density.

Inside, the Galaxy Grand is resolutely mid-range. It has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor but is able to run many of the Samsung-only features found in more high-end devices such as the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2. These include Samsung Hubs, pop-up video, direct call and S Voice.

The first version of the Galaxy Grand to hit the shelves will be a dual-SIM iteration, most likely aimed at travellers. A single-SIM version will follow.

The handset will have an 8-megapixel camera, DLNA, a 2,100mAh battery and HSPA+21Mbps mobile broadband connectivity. It will have just 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM, although the inclusion of a microSD slot makes storage less of an issue.

Pricing and release dates have not been revealed.

Internet Domain Name Disputes and Resolution - CREATE Legal

As you start and grow your business and its online presence, you should be aware of the legal issues related to Internet domain names. A domain name is a valuable asset to your business as a branding and marketing tool. That is why it is important to understand laws about Internet domain name registration and actions you can take to dispute domain names that infringe upon your trademark rights.

This first part of our two-part series on Internet domain names will introduce basic concepts about domain names and domain name dispute resolution. The second part of our series will provide a more detailed discussion on pursuing legal action against owners of domain names that infringe upon your trademark.

Domain Names Defined

A domain name is ?the address of a web site that is intended to be easily identifiable and easy to remember,? such as www.create-legal.com. Companies often use their business names or other words and phrases associated with their businesses as domain names so that people can identify the businesses with the websites and more easily access the content of their websites.

Trademarks vs. Domain Names

A trademark is ?a word, name, symbol, or device that is used in trade with goods to indicate the source of the goods and to distinguish them from the goods of others.? Although trademarks and domain names are not synonymous, the two areas intersect when there is an issue of whether use of the domain name becomes a trademark violation.

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), ?use of a domain name only as part of a web address does not qualify as source-indicating trademark use, though other prominent use apart from the web address may qualify as trademark use.?Registration of a domain name with a domain name registrar does not give you any trademark rights.? The mere registration of a domain name does not give you trademark rights on the name, but use of the domain name through such actions as publishing and promoting the domain name may rise to the level of trademark use. You should be make sure the domain name you are using and promoting for your business does not contain a trademarked name belonging to someone else who has not given you permission to use it. Trademark violations occur when there is ?confusion in the marketplace,? when a consumer could confuse the business represented by the domain name with another business represented by a trademark contained in the domain name.

Domain Name Disputes

Domain name disputes often involve companies battling over the ownership of Internet domain names from entities known as ?cybersquatters.? Cybersquatting is ?the pre-emptive registration of trademarks by third parties as domain names.? Some cybersquatters register domain names with the intention of selling them at high prices to the companies who own the trademarks. Other cybersquatters exploit domain names by taking advantage of the online traffic that popular brands attract and misdirecting consumers to the cybersquatters? own websites for such business as selling counterfeit goods.

Domain Name Disputes in the Creative Industry

Domain name disputes are particularly prevalent in the fashion industry. Gucci frequently takes legal action against cybersquatters who target Gucci?s trademarked name. In 2012, Gucci won over 100 domain names by bringing 6 cases to the World International Property Organization(WIPO), an international dispute resolution agency for domain name disputes.In its disputes before WIPO, Gucci claimed that it should own the domain name registrations to websites such as ?cheapguccionsale.com? and ?guccishoponline.org.? Because these websites use Gucci?s trademarked name, Gucci successfully argued that the cybersquatters infringed on Gucci?s trademark rights by creating consumer confusion and exploiting Gucci?s name to sell goods that are most likely counterfeit. Other famous luxury brands, including Swarovski, Burberry, Cartier and Dior, have also recently taken legal action against cybersquatters.

The Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) of 1999

Challenges to a domain name can be made through the US federal courts by filing a lawsuit under the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) of 1999. ACPA allows ?individuals and companies to challenge domain names that are similar to their business names and other trademarks.?ACPA makes it ?illegal to register, ?traffic in? or use a domain name that is identical or confusingly similar to a distinctive or famous mark ?or which dilutes a famous mark??.Under ACPA, a mark is distinctive if ?the consumers have come to recognize it as the source or origin of certain goods or services.?In addition, ?traffic in? refers to transactions ?involving the domain name that generates value for the cybersquatter.?If a trademark owner successfully wins a claim under the ACPA, a court order would be granted that requires the domain be transferred back to the trademark owner. In certain cases, payment of monetary damages could also be ordered in addition to the transfer of ownership.

Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP)

Alternatively, lawsuits can be avoided by utilizing the?Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP)?created by the?Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit corporation that manages and controls domain name registrations. There are several dispute resolution providers approved by ICANN, with WIPO being the most commonly used provider. UDRP provides a relatively quick and less expensive legal mechanism to resolve a domain name dispute by providing a streamlined procedure to transfer or cancel ownership of domain names. The resolution method may be more ideal for those who want to avoid costly and lengthy litigation in foreign jurisdictions because ?it does not matter whether the trademark owner and domain name holder live in different countries.?

Choose Your Domain Name Wisely

Anyone can register a domain name as long as it has not already been taken. However, just because a domain name is available does not mean that you are legally permitted to use it for promoting your own business. Domain name registrars such as GoDaddy do not perform any trademark ownership verification before registering a new domain name for you so it is your responsibility to consider intellectual property matters. If you register and use a domain name that infringes upon another person?s trademark, you could face a lawsuit under ACPA or mediation/arbitration under UDRP. Before registering a domain name, you should search the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) to see if the name or phrase you are using for your desired domain name has already been trademarked.
