Meet the Lumia 920 and 820, Nokia's first Windows Phone 8 handsets

The Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 are powered by Windows Phone 8. Do they live up to the hype??

A week after Samsung introduced the first Windows Phone 8 handset, Nokia has taken the wraps off two new devices of its own: The Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820. Both handsets will come equipped with Microsoft's latest mobile operating system, and both handsets will boast a powerful?1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor.?But the Lumia 820, with its?less-glitzy?camera and display, is a device for budget-minded shoppers.?

The Lumia 920 is the real prize ? a full-featured phone for die-hard phone geeks. Unlike the 820, the 920 will be equipped with a?8.7-megapixel camera with Nokia PureView advanced optical imaging stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics; also check out the?1.2-megapixel front-facing camera and 4.5-inch HD screen, complete with so-called "ClearBlack" technology, which Nokia claims makes the display easier to see in bright sunlight.?

So is the 920 as good as it sounds? Well, PC World's Amber Bouman got an early hands-on with the device, and she, for one, is smitten.?

"All in all, the Lumia 920 looks lovely, performs smoothly, and has a deluge of features ? especially if your smartphone doubles as a camera," Bouman writes. "While many of the physical aspects of the new phone were similar to the older Lumia models ? save for that exceptional camera ? it?s the software that really stands out."

She reserved special praise for the Windows 8 tiled interface, which operated "without any lag."?

Over at Gizmodo, meanwhile, Kyle Wagner calls the display on the 920 "gorgeous. It's bright and defined and photos look incredible on it," he adds. "The start screen looks great, but photos especially look amazing. We couldn't use the PureView camera, which looked so amazing in the demos, but the onboard photos were displayed tack sharp. The phone's [pixels per inch] is dead even with the iPhone's 326 PPI retina screen, and in the real world, it looks just as good."?

So when will Nokia actually launch its new Windows 8 device? It's unclear, but we expect the 920 to hit shelves sometime in the next month, give or take ? the better to go head-to-head with the iPhone 5, and also the better to take full advantage of the holiday shopping bump.?

CelebrateLove.com - 'Relationships Only Thrive in a Safe Space?'

?Relationships Only Thrive in a Safe Space??, Chris Prentiss

?We find rest in those we love,
and we provide a resting place
in ourselves for those who love us.?

~ Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153)

Your relationship thrives, withers, lives, or dies in an environment. If the environment in which your relationship lives is harsh and unforgiving, a place where sarcasm, degradation, and anger is present and where forgiveness, thoughtfulness, and love are in short supply, your relationship will wither and die? painfully. It will die just as a garden dies without water, nutrients, and light. ? Chris Prentiss, Guest Author

Your generosity, understanding, good nature, supportive attitude, gentleness, and knowledge of the ?Laws of Love? are the nutrients and the bonds of a strong, endearing, and enduring relationship. Blended together, they create the environment for a successful relationship: Safe Space.

Here is the heart of the Law of Love regarding Safe Space: In your eyes, your partner cannot make a mistake or do anything wrong. That is the ultimate condition of Safe Space. That doesn?t mean your partner will not make mistakes, do things you don?t agree with, or do things that are hurtful to you or someone you care about. What it means is that you will treat their action as if nothing wrong was done, as if what happened is fine with you.

You will not be harsh, hurtful, sarcastic, degrading, or even somewhat put off by what happened. You will keep in mind as you respond that you are talking to someone you want to love you completely, warmly, and sincerely. You are talking to someone you want to spend the rest of your life with. If you were able to choose how your partner would treat you, wouldn?t you want to be treated gently, lovingly, and with great tenderness and complete consideration no matter what you were to do?

The degree to which you provide Safe Space for your loved one is the same degree to which your relationship will blossom and the same degree to which you will find the love you seek in the eyes and heart of the one you love. The degree to which you fail to provide Safe Space is the same degree to which your relationship will diminish, tarnish, and die. If you do not offer a haven of Safe Space, your mate may become afraid of you and afraid to make mistakes, which will surely cause those mistakes to occur. If you would exist in that rarified world of relationship heaven where only a few have entered and even fewer have remained, you must fully embrace the condition of Safe Space.

When you live by the law that relationships only thrive in Safe Space, you do not become upset or angry with your partner over hurtful events caused by them because you know that, speaking in today?s vernacular, you?ve got to cut them some slack ? in fact, total slack ? if you want to be loved. Creating Safe Space requires nothing less than becoming the kind of person who looks with perfect equanimity on the shortcomings of your loved one ? the kind of person who sees the seeming mistakes, omissions, blunders, failures, and even the intentional hurts and transgressions and makes them all okay.

Making Your Love Felt

At this point, there will most likely arise in your mind a myriad examples in your current or past relationships that you can point to and say, ?Well, what about this or that ? am I supposed to just overlook those things? Am I supposed to say, ?Okay honey, it?s alright that you continue to lie to me.? Or ?Don?t worry, dear, about not paying the bills on time, month after month, and ruining our credit. I understand you were busy with your friends and I love you just the same.??

Lying is not okay. Ruining your credit is not okay. Driving recklessly is not okay. Being disrespectful or nasty to you is not okay. Neglecting important things is not okay. Cooperation is not a sentiment; it is an economic necessity. If those transgressions and things like them continue despite your best efforts to help your partner correct them, they enter into the domain of ?deal breakers.?

Before the above examples turn into deal breakers, when they are still in the annoying stage but have not become intolerable, it?s essential that you create Safe Space for your partner so you do not wind up appearing uncaring or difficult or making them feel as if you don?t love them. How you treat your partner during those occurrences will determine the degree of love and respect you will receive from your partner.

In the universal sense of the word, all events are part of the perfection of the unfolding Universe, part of your process of growth.

By acting in accord with that truth and carefully adhering to what you have just read about Safe Space, your partner will revere you, love you, cling to you, and be forever grateful to you for being the loving, compassionate, and understanding person they have always dreamed of and longed for, either consciously or subconsciously. Your loved one will speak about you and think about you in the highest terms of endearment. You will have earned their love.

Providing Safe Space for another is, in reality, an act of complete selfishness. What you are after is to be totally loved by the one you love. You are, in fact, the direct beneficiary of your creation of Safe Space. First, you get to live with and experience the joy and love of someone who is free to grow and expand in the Safe Space you have created. Second, you get to experience what it?s like to live with someone who is not afraid of doing the wrong thing. That leaves you and your partner free to experiment as you move through life and removes fear from your relationship. And third, because your mate has experienced what it is like to live with a person who is generous and compassionate, they will therefore want to provide you with the same Safe Space you have provided them.

As my wife, Lyn, says, ?Partnerships allow you to love yourself and life through another.? To the extent that you have created Safe Space, your partner will have perfect trust in you. Your partner will ?know? you ? know you to be in love with them and know that they can trust you to be loving in response to any action they take, even actions that would seem to the world to be mistakes, bad judgment, or even intentional transgressions.

Removing Fear from Your Relationship

Here?s an example of how Safe Space manifests itself in a perfect relationship environment. Say your spouse takes the new car out to run an errand and smashes it. When you are committed to Safe Space in your relationship, your response will be: ?As long as you?re safe, that?s all I really care about. I hope you?re not upset by it. I want you to know that I love you, and that you are my treasure. I was so worried about damaging our new car, and now I realize that the only thing that is important is that you are safe and sound. Cars are replaceable ? you?re not!?

How do you think your spouse will respond to that? I know how I would respond. I would feel a surge of love and gratitude for being in the presence of someone who truly loves me, who thinks far more of me than of the banged-up car, whose first and main concern is my well-being. Wouldn?t you feel the same?

Here?s another example of how to create Safe Space in your relationship. Say you arrive at the airport, only to discover that your partner forgot to bring his or her driver?s license or passport as identification. Your response: ?No problem, honey. We?re obviously not supposed to be on that flight. Since we can?t fly until tomorrow, let?s have a special celebration tonight to make the most of this unexpected bonus time. I?m actually glad we missed the flight. Something good will come of it. Do you know, I may have forgotten to lock the back door. This will give me a chance to check on it.?

Then, all during the rest of that day, find reasons to feel good about having missed the flight. Make statements such as these: ?It would take a heck of a lot more than that for me to ever be angry with you.? ?You?re such a perfect partner for me, and I don?t want you to feel uncomfortable, even in the slightest, for anything you do.? ?Do you know, if we hadn?t missed that flight, we might never have discovered this great restaurant.? ?If we had made that flight, you wouldn?t have gotten that important phone call from work.?

Safe Space relieves apprehension on the part of your loved one. We all know what it feels like when we know we are going to be scolded or punished for having done something wrong. Those feelings should be absent in your relationship. Making everything your partner does okay with you will remove most of what causes dissension in relationships. There?s really nothing quite like Safe Space for creating and maintaining a wonderful, loving, stress-free relationship.

Don?t forget about yourself too. Remember to create Safe Space for yourself as well. Don?t needlessly beat yourself up over things you?ve done that you wish you hadn?t. Be patient with yourself. Give yourself the right to be happy with yourself and your actions. Many a life has been ruined because of long-term feelings of guilt, regrets about missed opportunities, and the whole world of coulda, woulda, shoulda.

Great relationships are not an accident. Having the relationship of your dreams does not depend on luck?on the roll of the relationship dice. It?s the result of knowing the right steps to take to create an enduring, fulfilling friendship with your partner.

In this wise and practical work, Chris Prentiss, author of the popular Zen and the Art of Happiness, shows exactly how to create the relationship you desire by working with fourteen powerful laws of love?time-tested principles that for thousands of years have brought soul-drenching happiness to those who have followed them.

Prentiss combines compelling storytelling and empowering truths with targeted action steps to help you build a loving, long-lasting relationship. You?ll learn important keys such as how to provide Safe Space, who is attracted to you and why, the purpose behind your partnership, the power of your beliefs, how to heal unhealthy patterns from the past that affect you and your partner today, and how to save a troubled relationship or decide if you should move on.

Even in the most challenging of times that come to us all, The Laws of Love will give you the tools you need to sustain a rewarding relationship?one where great joy is experienced, great deeds are accomplished, and, most importantly, great love is returned.

Larry?s NOTE: ?I?ve read, ?The Laws of Love: Creating the Relationship of Your Dreams.? Every couple should keep this book on their night stand and read it together ? a little bit at a time. Digest it. Savor it. It will help you find the path to a relationship you will be proud to be in. Chris Prentiss has written a terrific guidebook to genuine couple happiness!?

Self-Lock: Why It's Hard to Improve Your Self-Esteem, And What You ...

Karen, a 35-year-old human resources manager, had spent the last six months of therapy peeling ?back the layers of her self-image as ?damaged,? to finally start feeling good about herself. But when she met Alan, who spent their first few dates cheerleading her in her efforts to secure a promotion, she broke things off with him almost immediately.

?What happened?? I asked.

?He?s up to something,? she whispered, more to herself than to me. ?No one could possibly think that highly of me after knowing me for a few dates.?

Does Karen?s choice seem strange to you? Maybe Alan did have ulterior motives for singing her praises. After all, there certainly are plenty of guys willing to flatter women just to get them in bed, so we can?t fault her for being a little suspicious of his ?you go girl? approach to dating, can we? But what concerned me most wasn?t Karen?s bleak interpretation of Alan?s motives. It was the fact that, in the process of brushing him off, she?d completely retreated to her old view of herself as unworthy, damaged, and boring. Two weeks earlier, she?d strolled confidently into her boss?s office and asked about a raise, but soon after she dumped Alan, she fell back on her old habit of laying awake at night, sifting through the day?s events to find fresh of evidence of her personal failures; now she even wondered if her boss had made the wrong choice altogether when he said he?d promote her.? It was if the ?damaged? Karen was reaching out with its last, dying breath, pulling her back to a familiar dark place. All at once, her story about who she was and who she wanted to be were at war. Whenever this happens?when identity appears to be at odds with change?I call the problem self-lock.

As puzzling as this might seem, researchers and clinicians have known about the phenomenon of self-lock for some time. As a matter of fact, about ten years ago, psychologists William Swann of University of Texas at Austin and Brett Pelham of SUNY-Buffalo, ran a study on roommate preference, with particular attention to what people with a low opinion of themselves were looking for in the way of a dorm-buddy. Most of us would predict that we?d love a cheery roommate who always has a kind word ready when things seem gloomy. But as you can probably guess, that isn?t what the glummest coeds said they wanted at all. They much preferred to trudge home at the end of each day to a roommate who disliked them. In fact, they made it very clear they?d rather avoid the ones who liked them altogether.

When it comes to marriage, Swann discovered, self-lock is an especially pernicious problem. People with a poor self-image may begin their relationships delighted by love notes, pep-talks and adoring fan mail from their partners, but after a time, the marriage shift? kicks in?at which point, they prefer being kicked to being kissed. In fact, if their spouses are unwise enough to insist on fawning over them instead of supporting their self-bashing?by, say, volunteering regular doses of criticism?people with low self-image gradually find more and more ways to avoid them. They write their partner?s accolades off as na?ve, inauthentic, perhaps even misguided. Swann?s conclusion is that our need to maintain our identity (self-verification), even if it?s negative, often outweighs our need for affirmation (self-enhancement). In other words, when it comes to love, we feel most comfortable with a partner who shares our opinion of who we are, even if that opinion isn?t especially kind.

Research only offers tentative theories as to why this might be, but in the clinical realm, authors have grappled with the phenomenon of self-lock for more than half a century. A school of thought called relational psychoanalytic theory holds that one reason we cling to a negative identity is that our sense of self and intimacy are inextricably bound to one another. That is, we protect old versions of ourselves, even if they?re negative, because we expect that who we are keeps us connected to the people around us. It?s as if we?re all spinning webs of connection, reaching out to people, and at the center of it all is our self-image: I?m stupid, I tell myself, because so many of my relationships confirm the belief? and if I change that, then the way people relate to me (condescending, dismissive, authoritarian), won?t fit my identity anymore. Break the center?change our identity? and our fear is that the whole web of connection falls away. We?ll nurse the darkest thoughts about ourselves if they protect our need for connection.

So how can we loosen the grip of self-lock? The answer appears to be by falling in love with a good partner. Psychologist Arthur Aron of Stonybrook University, has spent years elaborating on what he calls self-expansion theory, which suggests, among other things, that in healthy, intimate relationships, we often experience tremendous growth, exploring new experiences and even lesser known aspects of who we are (you can find more recent research supporting this idea here). Find the right relationship, Aron says, and maybe you won?t just leave behind your negative self-image; maybe you?ll fashion a better one.

You may have noticed a problem here. If, like Karen, we?re pushing away people who help us change and embrace a better self-image, then how can we nurture friendships, let alone fall in love, with such generous people? How can we ever liberate ourselves from such a stubbornly negative identity if it also keeps us tied to people who confirm it?

What Aron?s research suggests is that relationships hold the key, simultaneously, to perpetuating an impoverished sense of self and expanding it beyond the familiar. At key moments of change we become anxious, like Karen, precisely because we?re not sure if our current web of relationships?or any new connections, for that matter?can remain in tact with a different identity at the center. People will leave or abandon us, our unconscious minds tells us, if we try to become someone new. So we unconsciously select relationships with friends and lovers who need us to remain just as we are and push away the ones that allow us to grow. As a result, the only way to fashion a new identity, ala Aron?s self-expansion theory, is to stay the course when someone disagrees?with our low opinion of ourselves. This is just one of the many reasons I tell clients to read discomfort with more affirming relationships not as reason to exit, but as an invitation to change.

Say, for example, that the students and spouses in Swann?s research had tried to embrace their partners? or roommates? support by saying something like, ?I feel lucky to have met someone who sees me the way you do?and I love that you help me see myself as a better person.? If they had, they might have rewarded someone for seeing the best in them (rather that the worst)?and encouraged that person to move even closer. And each time they repeated that same intimacy-enhancing exchange, their minds would link the new self-image with closeness instead of loss. More affirming interactions. More self-affirming identity.?

And that?s the key to breaking self-lock. The more times we frame our discomfort with affirming relationships as an invitation to change and move towards them, the more we embrace the notion that we?re as good (or loving, or worthy, or smart) as our partners and friends believe us to be. Each new connection offers a potentially new identity. But we can only reach the best versions of who we are by breathing through the anxiety and walking boldly towards the unfamiliar.

China, US divided on Syria, sea spat, but vow goodwill

Jim Watson / Pool via Reuters

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaks with Chinese President Hu Jintao at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Wednesday.

By NBC News wire services

BEIJING -- China and the United States were divided on Wednesday over how to end the bloodshed in Syria and defuse tension in the South China Sea and other global troublespots, but stressed hope for steady ties as they navigate political transitions at home.?

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi vowed goodwill after talks which had been preceded by criticism from Beijing of Clinton's calls for a multilateral solution to the territorial disputes in the South and East China Seas.

Clinton told reporters that such disagreements did not have to hobble cooperation.

"I'm very proud of the strength and resilience that we have built into our relationship," she said after talks with Yang in the cavernous Great Hall of the People in Beijing.?

"It makes it possible for us to talk about anything, and to find ways to tackle issues frankly and forthrightly," Clinton said, adding that the two sides would not see eye-to-eye on all the issues that are part of their vast relationship.?

Chinese media: 'Many Chinese people dislike Hillary'

Yang also cast relations in a positive light, saying both sides could work together as long as "mutual respect for each other's core interests and major concerns" continues.?
