Home Foreclosure Legal Aid Project Continues | KIMA CBS 29 - News ...

Story Published: Jul 18, 2011 at 11:45 AM PDT

WASHINGTON ? The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) is pleased to announce that its Home
Foreclosure Legal Aid Project will continue to help homeowners for another two years. The program
provides free legal assistance to low- and moderate-income homeowners whose homes are in danger of
foreclosure. Since the program?s inception in June 2009, the WSBA; its program partner, the Northwest
Justice Project (NJP); and hundreds of volunteer lawyers have helped Washington families in crisis.
Program continuation and expansion is made possible by a $1.1 million grant from the Washington
Attorney General?s Office to the Washington State Bar Foundation, the WSBA?s charitable arm. Funds
came from a settlement the Attorney General?s Consumer Protection Division reached with Wells Fargo
regarding its ?Pick a Pay? loan scheme. These funds are enabling the WSBA to extend the project through
June 2013, and expand staff attorney capacity. The additional attorneys and support staff will provide
greater presence in the three counties with the highest rates of foreclosure (King, Pierce, and Snohomish),
and they will be able to provide enhanced training and support for the lawyer volunteers.
The WSBA developed the Home Foreclosure Legal Aid Project in partnership with NJP in response to
the foreclosure crisis in our state. The goal of the program is to help Washington homeowners avoid
foreclosure and stay in their homes. Washington lawyers have volunteered their time and expertise ?
expanding the safety net to families with nowhere else to turn.
Homeowners in need of help who are unable to afford a lawyer should call the Home Ownership
Information Hotline at 1-877-894-HOME (4663) to speak with a housing counselor, who can provide a
referral to the program. For a link to resources, see the WSBA website.

Stage 14

Pressure & Expectations

There has been a tremendous amount of research in the world of sports into the ?why? of performances. Why do athletes win? Why do they lose? Why do they ?choke??

One of the more interesting questions to ponder, and to research, is why certain athletes perform way beyond expectations, and why some always fail to meet expectations.

Let?s take a look at two riders who factored in the finish of today?s stage: Thomas Voeckler, and Tom Danielson. Danielson, who rides for Garmin, was heir-apparent to Lance Armstrong as America?s next great rider, and signed with the Discovery Channel Team in 2005. Now, 6 years later, he is riding in his first ever Tour de France! Danielson never performed up to expectations.

Voeckler was a relatively unknown figure in 2004. He won the French National Championships in June, which may have given him a boost of confidence going into the Tour that year. He gained enough time in a break on stage 5 to take the yellow jersey. Critics thought he might hold onto it for a day or two, but against all odds he hung on for 10 days! In the 2004 Tour, and ever since, Voeckler has always exceeded expectations, and he?s doing it again this year.

Without knowing either rider, I still have a pretty good idea as to why that is, based on my experiences as an athlete and a coach, and from the research literature. Danielson has always had tremendous pressure to meet high expectations. Voeckler, meanwhile, has been free of those pressures, and consequently free to perform.

How can you apply this to your riding? Free yourself of expectations! Putting stress on yourself to meet a certain goal will have you riding physically and mentally tight. Relax! We do this for fun and for fitness, but the same principles apply to you and the pros ? so be like Voeckler, free to ride great and have fun, AND, free to have a bad day without consequence.

Culinary Tour of the North End

Yesterday was such a treat. I spent the whole afternoon eating!

I joined a small group of local bloggers to experience authentic Italy through the eyes of Bertolli by exploring Boston?s vibrant Italian culinary scene in the North End. We spent the day ?serving Italy? with a tour of the best Italian specialty shops that Boston has to offer, each of which shared Bertolli?s passion for food and fresh ingredients.

_MG_2904 (333x500)

Vittoria Caffe

The first stop of our culinary tour was at Vittoria Caffe for a discussion and tasting of Italian cappuccinos, biscotti, and cannoli? a combination that was truly divine!

Established in 1929, Vittoria Caffe is world renowned as the first Italian caffe in Boston. The Vittoria?s old world charm gives one a feeling of being in a romantic cafe in ?Bella Italia.? From caffes to pasticceria tradizionale to gelati, you can experience authentic Italian treats in the heart of Boston?s North End.

IMG_0003 (500x375)

While we waited for everyone in the group to arrive, we chatted and enjoyed some treats. I ordered an iced latte, tried a chocolate biscotti, and part of a chocolate cannoli. Holy yum indeed!

_MG_2851 (333x500)

Fun fact:Vittoria Caffe sells about 700 cannoli per day!

IMG_0001 (500x375)

I also tried some mint chocolate chip gelati, which was so incredibly creamy.

IMG_0004 (500x375)

I?m not going to lie, I loved that we started our culinary tour with dessert!

Salumeria Italiana

We spent about an hour relaxing and lingering over our coffees at Vittoria Caffe before we departed for Salumeria Italiana, where we enjoyed a tasting and demonstration of Italian cheese, cured meats, and olive oil.

_MG_2901 (500x333)

Salumeria Italiana is home of the finest foods from Italy and all of the Mediterranean. The store opened more than 40 years ago in Boston?s North End because an Italian mother wanted to feed her baby son the wonderful foods she knew from her homeland. For more than four decades, Salumeria Italiana has stocked the best in olive oils, vinegars, pastas, and other specialty products.

_MG_2861 (500x333)

Salumeria Italiana was easily my favorite part of yesterday?s culinary tour. I mean, I smelled delicious cheese as soon as I walked in!

_MG_2863 (500x333)

The store was stocked with quality olive oils, vinegars, pastas, and other specialty products? most of which were imported straight from Italy.

2011-07-16 0041

The staff at Salumeria Italiana was also incredibly friendly, helpful, and accommodating. If I lived closer, I?d frequent this shop all of the time? the meat and cheese selection alone were really impressive. The fresh breads were pretty amazing too!

_MG_2866 (500x333)

_MG_2894 (500x333)

At Salumeria Italiana, we tried a few different cured meats and cheeses.

_MG_2870 (500x333)

My favorite of the bunch was a cheese called Moliterno al Tartufo:

Moliterno al Tartufo is an amazing combination of beautifully aged cheese with intense truffle flavor. Made of sheep and goat?s milk in Sardinia, this cheese is aged and then injected with black truffles for more aging. The result is irresistible flavor and texture. Perfect to star alone as a cheese course with red wines or dessert wines.

This cheese was life changing. I honestly don?t think I?ve ever tasted a more delicious cheese. I might be making a trip back to the North End sooner than later!

_MG_2883 (333x500)

The olive oils that we tried were also outstanding. It was so interesting to learn and experience how different olive oils can taste depending on where they?re grown. We also tried the most outstanding aged balsamic vinegar, which we got to take home with us. I can?t wait to have it on fresh greens.

2011-07-16 0042

Gigi?s Gelateria

The next stop on our culinary tour was Gigi?s Gelateria for a tasting and discussion of homemade Italian gelato. Gelato twice in one day? Yes, please!

_MG_2903 (500x333)

As the North End?s first gelateria, Frank DePasquale opened Gigi Gelateria to give patrons all natural authentic Italian gelato.

IMG_0009 (500x375)

Frank chatted with our group for a little bit and told us what makes his gelato so special. He said the Gelateria doesn?t use eggs, heavy cream or butter in their gelato, which leaves just milk, sugar, and natural flavorings to create the frozen treat.

IMG_0006 (500x375)

With over 30 flavors to chose from, there?s an option for everyone. The extensive list includes unconventional flavors such as lemoncello, panna cotta, and amaretto, but you can still savor classics, like chocolate, vanilla, and tiramisu.

I picked Stracciatella, which is kind of like chocolate chip, but with finer bits of chocolate throughout, which gave it a really smooth texture with just the slightest crunch in every bite. Delish.

IMG_0010 (375x500)

After enjoying our second gelato of the day, we had a little time to kill before the next visit, so our fearless leaders from Bertolli offered to snap some photos of the group. Nine bloggers = nine cameras!

IMG_0012 (500x375)

Success!

IMG_2913 (500x333)

DePasquale?s Homemade Pasta Shoppe

Our next visit was to a pasta shop specializing in over 50 homemade different varieties.

DePasquale?s Homemade Pasta Shoppe is a tribute to DePasquale?s mother and the Sunday?s of his youth spent watching her make pasta in Italy. At the Pasta Shoppe, customers and pasta enthusiasts alike can find every essential ingredients for a homemade meal. From freshly baked Italian breads, imported Italian cheeses, olive oils, vinegars, and tomatoes to an array of 50 types of pasta and daily selections of more than 20 varieties of ravioli; there is no need to look any further for your favorite ingredients.

_MG_2917 (500x333)

The Pasta Shoppe had so many different varieties of pasta! It was so cool seeing all of them! Check out just some of these delicious ravioli combinations:

  • pumpkin
  • spinach/truffles
  • artichoke/goat cheese
  • prosciutto/ricotta
  • portabella/asiago
  • gorgonzola/sundried tomato
  • smoked chicken/mascarpone
  • braised short rib/escarole

2011-07-16 0043

Quick tip: Pasta is Italy is served al dente or ?to the tooth.? To see if it?s cooked perfectly, pull a piece from the boiling water, break it in half, and look at its middle. If you still see traces of while (the uncooked flour), it needs a little more time.

_MG_2930 (500x333)

Lucca

The final stop of our culinary tour was a customized dinner of fresh homemade pasta paired with delicious Italian wines at Lucca. I?ve never eaten a meal in the North End, so I was especially psyched. It was a first for me!

_MG_2932 (500x333)

Named for the Tuscan town renowned for its extra virgin olive oil, Lucca offers Northern Italian classics, combined with new innovations that are sure to tantalize the most discriminating palate.

Thanks to culinary inspiration accumulated from his regular trips to Italy, Lucca?s executive chef, Patrick Duffy, offers acclaimed regional Italian cuisine, homemade breads, authentic pasta dishes, and of course, succulent desserts. Time spent in the region has taught him the value of the freshest produce and ingredients.

IMG_0019 (500x375)

Bertolli prepared a special menu for us with antipasti, a tasting of fresh pasta paired with wine, and dessert.

IMG_0017 (375x500)

The antipasto was a presentation of the Chef?s selection of imported meats, seafood, and roasted vegetables. I tried a bite of everything and enjoyed it all.

IMG_0021 (500x375)

The antipasto was paired with a fantastic white wine: St. Michael-Eppan (Alto Adige) 2010 Pinot Biance. It was light and mineraly. I was a big fan of it.

IMG_0023 (375x500)

The main course was a side-by-side pasta tasting:

  • Tagliatelle: Black pepper tagliatelle pasta with shucked Maine lobster, North Country smoked bacon, chanterelle mushrooms, sweet corn, and scallions.
  • Ravioli: House-made caramelized onion and goat cheese ravioli with fava beans, escarole, blistered cherry tomatoes and basil, finished with aged goat cheese.

IMG_0026 (375x500)IMG_0027 (375x500)

I thought I would love the ravioli (goat cheese? hello!), but the tagliatelle was my favorite out of the two dishes. It had massive chunks of lobster in it and a ton of bacon-y flavor. The pasta was also fresh and perfectly chewy.

For dessert, I tried blueberry-flavored Grappa, which was pretty tasty, but also super strong! Holy moly! I only ended up having a few sips of it.

IMG_0031 (500x375)

Since we enjoyed so many sweets throughout the day, the table decided to order a few different desserts and share them. My favorite was a warm Chocolate Torte with vanilla bean gelato. Mmm! It reminded me of a super chocolaty and dense brownie.

IMG_0035 (500x375)

Many thanks to Bertolli for such a wonderful culinary adventure in the North End. It was a truly a delectable day!

Even before business finance funding choices became more limited recently, construction loans were generally thought of to be riskier than alternative commercial financing by most lenders. For a industrial lender, the foremost vital risk factors for industrial construction financing typically embrace the following: (one) until the new building is completed, a commercial property cannot turn out income to repay a loan; (two) a substantial risk issue is the likelihood for contractor liens; and (three) many commercial construction comes take a lot of time to complete than originally projected and/or exceed initial price estimates. From a industrial lending perspective, it's seemingly that this difficulties seen in residential construction are indirectly impacting the supply of construction funding for commercial properties as a result of the potential for contractor liens incurred throughout residential comes can quickly scale back the money stability of contractors involved in both residential and business construction projects. This is a further reason why lenders are increasingly specializing in the chance of contractor liens as a rationale for providing less construction financing. The feasibility of land investments has traditionally included a permanent theme of "location, location and location" which reflects the importance of a particular locale for investing. This is often still an vital issue when lenders evaluate the prospects for commercial realty loans involving both existing business properties and new construction. A lender is probably to be most comfy with a stable to growing revenue stream for a business which can in turn lead to a stable to growing property valuation, thus preserving collateral for the commercial mortgage loan. For the primary time in several years, but, we tend to are usually seeing widespread reductions in both residential and commercial property values throughout abundant of the United States, with some areas of the country exhibiting a lot of volatility than others. A severe recession will result in decreasing income for many businesses over an extended amount of your time, and it's terribly tough for either lenders or borrowers to project when this downward trend can reverse. Given the difficulty of arranging financing based on location, using non-local lenders will be a sensible solution for business financing involving both existing commercial properties and new construction. Small business owners should obtain straightforward advice from a industrial loans professional who can provide effective methods for changing and difficult business finance funding things, especially in light of the challenging commercial borrowing climate prevailing currently.

China calls on U.S. to cancel Dalai Lama meeting (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China urged the United States on Saturday to cancel a planned meeting between President Barack Obama and Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, saying such a meeting would be harmful to U.S.-China relations.

"We firmly oppose any senior foreign government officials meeting with the Dalai Lama in any way," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement on the ministry's website.

Hong said China called on the United States to "cancel the decision for Obama to meet the Dalai Lama as soon as possible, and not do anything that could interfere with China's internal affairs or harm China-U.S. relations."

Review: Mario's Picross (3DS Virtual Console / Game Boy) | Premium ...

Fun with numbers

Picross has always been one of the weirder puzzle games at which Mario has tried his hand. It seems very boring to slowly create a picture using nothing but numbers, but once you get the hang of it the time simply flies by and you?ll find yourself playing for hours on end.

Mario?s Picross was the first game in which Mario attempted to solve these strange puzzles, and the only pre-DS Picross game to be released outside Japan originally. As such, it?s also the only pre-DS Picross game to feature an English tutorial.

Picross is played on a grid, comprised of numerous small blocks. The grid increases in size as you get further in the game ? early puzzles can be as small as 5?5, but the hardest puzzles will be 15?15. This is relatively small when compared to later Picross games ? for example, in Mario?s Super Picross, some puzzles are 20?25 in size.

Above and to the left of these blocks are a whole bunch of numbers. With your trusty hammer and chisel, you must chip away blocks on the grid corresponding to those numbers, eventually resulting in the creation of a pixellated picture. Let?s assume the grid is 5?5 ? if there is a ?5? listed above a column, that means all 5 blocks in that column must be chiselled.

If there are two numbers listed above a column, that means there are two sequences of blocks in that column that must be chiseled. For example, if ?2 2? is listed, there are two sequences, which are both 2 blocks in size ? it also means that there must be at least one space between the two pairs, because otherwise, of course, they?re not separate. Generally, it?s best just to leave a row/column alone if you can?t figure out the size of a gap and just continue on elsewhere; you?ll figure it out sooner or later. In a 5?5-sized puzzle, though, there?s exactly enough space for 2 blocks, 1 space, and 2 more blocks, so in that case it would be easy to figure out.

Thankfully, your chisel has a secondary function ? if you believe that a block must not be filled in, you can scratch an ?X? into it, so that you can easily tell that it should not be touched during the rest of the puzzle. This is extremely handy during bigger puzzles, so you should use it as much as possible.

The most important gameplay element is time, as you only have 30 minutes to complete every puzzle. Don?t think it?s that easy though ? if you happen to chisel a wrong block, you?ll lose two minutes of your time. If you make a second mistake, you?ll lose four, and a third, fourth or fifth mistake will cost you eight minutes. Therefore, you should make as few random guesses as possible. If you can?t even begin to figure out where to start, you can get a free hint at the outset of every puzzle. This will start a sort of roulette that you can stop at any time, and once it stops the row and column which are highlighted will be filled in completely.

The game starts you off with only two modes. ?Easy Picross? features rather basic puzzles with many easy to figure out chisel spots, making it perfect for beginners. ?Mario?s Picross? is for more experienced players and has puzzles that are a bit more difficult to figure out, because there?s generally multiple groups of blocks you must chisel in every row and column.

The Mario?s Picross mode is divided into two groups of puzzles ? the Kinoko (Mushroom) Course and the Star Course. You can only play the Star Course puzzles after beating all Kinoko Course puzzles, but there?s not really any change in difficulty between the two. Each puzzle group ? Easy, Kinoko and Star ? has 64 puzzles, making for a total of 192 to solve.

When you?ve solved every single one of these, you?ll unlock one final mode: Time Trial. This mode has another 64 puzzles, of which one is randomly selected every time you play (there is no list to pick from for this mode), but things play a little differently here: you can?t get a hint, and you will be never be told when you make a mistake. On the positive side, this means you can?t lose time due to mistakes, but on the negative side, you could waste a ton of time building off of a single wrong block that you?ve chiselled. This mode was expanded into ?Wario?s Picross? for other Mario?s Picross games, with just as many puzzles as the Mario mode. In this title, however, it?s limited to just these 64 puzzles.

Graphics and music-wise, Mario?s Picross does a very nice job. The graphics are obviously not too special when compared to other games, but they?re pleasant to look at and very appropriate for the game. During gameplay, you have a selection of five songs which you can change between at any time you want. They range from slow to upbeat, meaning there?s something for both the slow, careful players and the fast, determined ones. Each of them is quite catchy as well, so it?s no surprise some of them made a return in Mario?s Super Picross. Although this title looks and plays the same way that it did on the original Game Boy, the usual 3DS Virtual Console features are present. This includes the suspended state save as well as the ability to create a restore point; both are useful if you need to take a break mid-puzzle.

Conclusion

With 192 ?regular? puzzles and an additional 64 Time Trial puzzles, the value of Mario?s Picross is impressive, containing over 250 puzzles that can easily be taken with you anywhere you go. They?re not very hard compared to some of the brainteasers in the later games, which also have various extra features, but it?s still a great, addictive piece of software, and a nice start for Picross beginners or those who just want some more puzzles to crack.

Submitted 2011-07-12 20:31:13 We all wish that there was 36 hours in a day and 9 days a week, but there isn`t, as simple as that. Even if there were, a great many of us would be running around liker headless chickens trying to get everything done. It all boils down to being able to organize better the time that we have available, and also knowing when to say no! Organization and prioritization will have a profound and positive effect on your life, and greatly lower your stress levels too. Read the following tips and hints, none of them are difficult to implement, and your life will improve greatly.

Mismanaging your time can affect from morning til night, and then carries on into the next day and the next day until you are simply overwhelmed.. We all like to think of ourselves as super beings who can take on anything, but we simply aren`t. We need to be realistic about our capabilities and be honest about it. You many think that your boss will be impressed with the amount of work you are taking, but how impressed will he be when he finds you sobbing in the corner as you simply can`t cope? When you are asked to take on something new and you know you have so much backed up that you can`t do it, tell them that you appreciate, but you have so much other work on that you aren`t confident that you will be able to complete it to your usual high standards.

Prioritizing is another key factor in managing your time effectively. This is especially important as many relationships and marriages have broken down due to work taking priority over home. If you make arrangements to go to your kids play or parents evening, work around it. Keep a close eye on what you are taking on in the weeks leading up to it to ensure that you don`t let down the people who matter most. Someone else can do that project, but your kid will always remember that you let them down.

Time needs to be managed at home and not just in the workplace. Unless you are completely scatterbrained, you should have no problems organizing your time. If it helps, make a list of things that need to be done the night before, and put them in order of importance. Start with phone calls that need to be made, then everything else. Get onto them as soon as you get up. Don`t keep putting them off until you have watched something on TV, or have checked in with your friends on Face book etc. Leaving what needs to be done until the last minute is the most common reason for nothing getting done and the excuses starting! Time management isn`t rocket science, it is pure common sense. When things aren`t getting done, you start panicking and stressing out, and rushing things so that they don`t get done properly. Then you have to start again, whereas a little organization will get everything done both quickly and competently.

According to data released by CreditCards.com on January 11, 2011, New England and Middle Atlantic states are experiencing a disproportionate number of bankruptcy cases. ?In a comparison of 2010 and 2009 statistics, Maryland and New Jersey reported 14% increases, while Massachusetts showed 13% growth.

Attorneys and anyone seeking a reliable and professional source for consumer bankruptcy courses or housing counseling assistance are encouraged to visit the InCharge booth at this event. ?

Homebasedbusiness | HOME PARTY BUSINESS TIPS

Most people start building their network marketing business the same way. Their sponsor tells them all the ?old school? methods because that is what they were told.

Little do they realize those methods more closely resemble door-to-door sales or telemarketing than proper and effective marketing. They also don?t know it but none of the top earners of today use those methods.

There are some people who are very successful with those ?old school? methods and they get up there and tell everyone they use them but what they do not tell you is they have been in network marketing a long time and they have built up a network already of people who know, like, and trust them.

Using those ?old school? methods causes you to try to sign up people that you know the best to start with and one major problem with that besides the fact that they did not go looking for your product, service or opportunity is they know you are just starting out and cannot prove that it will be successful.

They may like you but how do they know you are any good with running an MLM business? What are you going to do for leads when you have exhausted your friends and family?

Believe me, you will exhaust them. There will be two ways you exhaust them. They will be exhausted from hearing about your opportunity and your list of personal contacts will run out.

Where will you turn for prospects then? The mall? The street corner? The Internet? If you turn to the mall or the street corner you are now no better than a street corner watch salesman.

Do you really think the top earners in MLM or network marketing use that for sales? If you turn to the Internet you will probably find a couple of options that most people use.

They either buy a list of leads to call off a site that sells them or they go to a social site and start telling every connection they make what a great opportunity they have.

Those lists can be pretty expensive though and when they are used up so is your money. If you were selling a list of leads online would you sell each name only once and would you tell buyers the names had been sold numerous times?

On the social sites, do you think those people who are doing the same thing with their business links are going to drop their company and sign up with yours the first time they see your link?

Is this how the top earners are building their business online? Just go to Facebook and try it. There are millions of people doing it but does that mean it will work?

The only way to be successful in MLM, network marketing, or any other Home Based Business is the same way traditional businesses do business.

First you learn how to do the business and if it is a marketing business that means marketing training. What if you wanted to become a doctor? Do you think anyone would let you do surgery on their brain with no training?

Network marketing is not brain surgery but it is a business and to have a reasonable chance of succeeding you will need some training. You would learn how to cook first if you wanted to open a restaurant, wouldn?t you?

Well how in the world would anyone be able to build a successful Multi-level-MARKETING business, Network MARKETING business, Direct Sales business or any other online MARKETING business without learning some proper marketing techniques?

Any business is easy when you know how. I once ran a residential framing company and even though I new very little about running a business I knew a lot about framing and so it was really easy.

I still had to learn how to run a business but the main purpose of the business was easy as pie. But it didn?t start out that way. It was hard before I knew how. Just like network marketing.

It is very difficult to see all of your friends avoiding you and relatives rejecting your opportunity. The same goes for working hard on the social sites and getting nowhere.

Just ask anyone who has ever tried to build an MLM and failed, believe me, there are quite a few out there. I am in MLM and I like being in MLM but when I go to social sites online and get beat over the head by strangers with their opportunity, it turns me off to their opportunity too so I know how my friends and relatives felt when I first started in my MLM business.

Now there is no way I would ever try to talk to anyone about my business before they showed an interest in what I have. That is because I now have learned how to market as a professional and it makes a huge difference in how you look at your business and in how you do business.

Anyone CAN do this business if they get some proper marketing training first. It is amazing how the right training will also eliminate all of the rejections that amateurs have to face.

If you want to learn how to build your network marketing business, there are no secrets and no shortcuts. Just get some training and start practicing some proper marketing techniques and it will become the same as it is for me and the top earners online, EASY!!

Bachmann's husband: Clinics are not anti-gay (AP)

MINNEAPOLIS ? The husband of Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann says counselors at his family's Christian clinics are not focused on converting homosexuals to heterosexuality through prayer.

Marcus Bachmann told the Star Tribune in a report published Friday ( http://bit.ly/nbCJQl) that his Minnesota clinics "don't have an agenda or a philosophy of trying to change someone."

Bachmann's comments follow the release of a gay activist's undercover video that appears to show one of the clinics' counselors offering reparative therapy to help him become heterosexual. The video produced by gay advocacy group Truth Wins Out was first aired Monday by ABC News.

Marcus Bachman, whose business has collected government funding from Medicaid-backed programs, says counselors follow the wishes of patients and don't force any treatment.

BHP Billiton agrees takeover of Petrohawk for $12.1 billion (Reuters)

SYDNEY (Reuters) ? Mining and oil company BHP Billiton unveiled a $12.1 billion agreed takeover of U.S. gas producer Petrohawk Energy Corp on Friday, marking the Anglo-Australian firm's biggest step into the booming shale-gas industry.

The all-cash deal is pitched at $38.75 per Petrohawk share, a 65 percent premium to its last-traded price, and follows BHP's $4.75 billion purchase of Chesapeake Energy's interest in an Arkansas shale gas field in February.

"This transaction would build on our recent acquisition of the Fayetteville shale in Arkansas and provides the potential to more than double our existing resource base," BHP's petroleum chief, J. Michael Yeager, said in a statement.

The acquisition gives BHP a risked resource base of 35 trillion cubic feet equivalent, the firm said.

Petrohawk shares last closed at $23.49, and portfolio manager Peter Chilton of Constellation Capital Management said he believed BHP felt secure about the premium being paid and was positioning itself for a U.S. economic rebound.

"Their view on their first shale buy was they were buying at bottom-of-the-cycle prices. I guess they see value here," he said. "With oil prices where they are, it's pretty hard to find opportunities that are not fully priced.

"If you have any confidence in an eventual U.S. economic recovery, that would be a positive. I don't think BHP wants to be seen to be buying something at the top of the market, so I think they should feel fairly safe buying this."

Petrohawk's assets cover about 1 million net acres in Texas and Louisiana, with estimated 2011 net production of around 950 million cubic feet equivalent per day, or 158 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.

BHP is targeting shale gas as it emerges a major global source of cleaner-burning fuel in a world which is increasingly looking for alternatives to polluting coal-fired energy. But shale gas is surrounded by environmental controversy.

Since March 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies have been reviewing the environmental and health impact of shale gas drilling, which could mean new regulations on the sector.

In April, a blowout of a natural gas well in Pennsylvania spewed thousands of gallons of drilling fluid that contaminated local waterways and intensified debate over a shale drilling method called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking."

Actor Gene Hackman's Western novel is a good yarn (AP)

"Payback at Morning Peak" (Pocket Books), by Gene Hackman: While some of his fellow actors were busy writing memoirs, Gene Hackman was working on his first solo novel. We know from movies like "Unforgiven" and "Bite the Bullet" that the Oscar winner can ride a horse, but how well can he wrangle Western fiction?

Just fine, it turns out.

"Payback at Morning Peak" is a satisfying revenge tale that takes place in New Mexico, a place Hackman called home long before he retired from the screen in 2004. He sets his story at a time when the American Southwest was still a lively and, at times, lawless frontier.

Just shy of 18, Jubal Young is a good boy schooled in literature by an educated mother and brought up on the land by an honest, hardworking father. When a dispute over their farm in the shadow of Morning Peak turns violent and Jubal loses all he loves, he tries to put aside a yearning for immediate retribution and to seek justice instead.

Justice isn't easy to come by. Bad men set their own rules, and most lawmen don't pay much attention to a teenager. That puts Jubal in the middle, leaving him the difficult task of pursuing a pack of killers without landing himself in jail or taking a bullet. His internal challenge isn't to give in to vengeance and cruelty, lest his parents' true legacy die with them.

Hackman has co-authored three historical novels since 1999. Writing on his own with "Payback at Morning Peak," he takes aim at a clear target: telling a good story. He hits it, too, engaging the reader with interesting characters and a galloping plot with few stumbles. There is more than a bit of familiarity in the goings-on ? the love interest is too predictable ? and Jubal's politeness can take the vigor out of a scene.

In a sense, Hackman's "Morning Peak" lies in Louis L'Amour country, a place where the conventions of the Western novel are as welcome as a man of honor and a pretty young lady. Riding a trail of his own making, Hackman takes hold of the reins with confidence.
