While voters in the Bartlesville school district rejected bond propositions totaling nearly $50 million Tuesday, voters in Union, Owasso and Jenks passed bond questions in their districts. Elsewhere, voters in Kellyville, in Creek County, approved the renewal of a 1.5-cent sales tax for public safety and municipal improvements. Bartlesville: A $48 million proposition at Bartlesville Public Schools included proposals to construct a new school, expand several facilities, close Central and Madison middle schools, and reorganize the student population. A separate $1.5 million question asked for transportation equipment. The larger question gained roughly 50 percent of the vote, well short of the 60 percent needed for passage. ?We?re obviously disappointed,? Superintendent Gary Quinn said. ?We believed we had a good plan that would have really benefited our students for the future. What we?ll do is get together with our school board and our long-range facilities planning committee to determine what our next steps will be.? Union: In the Union school district, voters overwhelmingly approved $19 million worth of bond issues, garnering 78.4 percent of the vote in the first proposition and 79.1 percent in the second. ?We?re very grateful we can go ahead and complete the Union Collegiate Academy and provide what is needed for students in fine arts and athletics,? Superintendent Cathy Burden said. The academy will enable 10th-graders ? in addition to juniors and seniors ? to enroll concurrently in high school and in Tulsa Community College or Tulsa Technology Center. Not only will the Union bond issue allow for the academy?s completion, but the district will build a new fine arts wing at the Sixth and Seventh Grade Center; upgrade tennis and swimming facilities; and purchase new textbooks, software and equipment for athletics, spirit and fine arts. The second of the two propositions will pay for up to 10 school buses and five special education buses. Several Union buses are more than 17 years old, and others have high mileage and need to be replaced, officials said. Burden said 33 percent more voters turned out this year than last year, when Union patrons overwhelmingly approved a $21.6 million bond issue despite hazardous weather conditions. That bond issue was to fund the first phase of Union Collegiate Academy and the construction of a Ninth Grade Center, as well as textbooks and to make capital improvements throughout the district. Owasso: School district voters approved a $5 million bond issue that will pay for textbooks, technology upgrades, software, maintenance of the district?s 14 school facilities and nine new school buses. ?Right now, we?re just really thankful that voters, in this difficult environment, supported the public schools,? Superintendent Clark Ogilvie said. He said administrators were concerned about whether voters would approve the bond issue because a large number of American Airlines employees ? who are facing layoffs ? reside in the area. Also, voters rejected a city bond issue last year, and school officials also feared possible residual effects from that, Ogilvie said. Jenks: School district voters approved a $10.4 million bond issue with just over 61 percent of the vote. The funds will pay for textbooks, computer software, desks, projectors, roof repairs, plumbing upgrades, security cameras, fire alarms, completion of renovations to the softball complex and at least two school buses. Superintendent Kirby Lehman said board members and staff are particularly pleased because the purchases will have a direct and positive impact on students.
