Counselling Directory ? Blog Archive ? Fifty Shades of Grey sparks ...

More open about our sexuality than everA counselling service in Bradford, Yorkshire has reported a greater demand for psychosexual therapies following the incredible success of EL James? erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

To meet rising demands in recent weeks, the counselling charity aims to employ two or three new psychotherapists over the next few months.

Sue Makin, a counsellor and sex therapist working with the service in Bradford, believes the success of Fifty Shades of Grey is a sign that women are beginning to accept and explore their sexuality now more than ever. For many years society has shied away from exploring female sexuality. Critics have commonly condemned the portrayal of women in porn as ?degradation?, or ?objectification?, and much of the advertising industry is built upon the premise that men want sex and women want marriage and children.

Fifty Shades of Grey, dubbed ?mummy porn?, proves that women are as in-tune with their sexual needs as men are. But what effect is this new acceptance of female sexuality having on modern-day relationships?

In a bid to explore the connection between sex and relationship bliss, counselling charity Relate and high-street sex shop Ann Summers have conducted the biggest survey of its kind involving 20,000 people.

Over half (55%) of respondents said they were ?very open? with their partners about their sexual needs. 56% of couples said they enjoyed a good sex life and nearly all (92% of men and 90% of women) said a good sex life requires hard work.

10% of couples said they didn?t have a good sex life, and this percentage increased with the length of time the couples had been together.

Sue Makin says: ?Most people have difficulties from time to time in their sex life and nipping these in the bud, with the support of one of our friendly and expert therapists, might be just what they need. If we can enable people to be close and intimate they can get through these problems together.?
