Overcoming Fear in Business and Leadership | Business Consulting ...

Posted on | August 14, 2012 | No Comments

Ralph Waldo Emerson said ?Always do what you are afraid to do.? John F Kennedy said ?The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.? If you take those two statements at face value, well overcoming our fears seems relatively easy; unfortunately, that?s not always the case.

If you were to survey anyone close to me, and those who know me well, and you asked them some of the things I?m afraid of, roller coasters would definitely be on the list. For some reason, I?ve never liked them. I?m just not much of a thrill seeker. When it comes to amusement park rides, I have my limits on how far I will push the envelope. I still talk about my fear of roller coasters when I?m speaking on the topic of leadership, and invariably almost everyone in the room laughs.

The majority of people do not like disclosing their fears, or they won?t admit to themselves that they have them. And it?s no different in the world of leadership and business. I was recently reading an article called ?5 Steps to Master Fear in Business,?* and these are the five steps that Erica Nicole outlined in that article.

  1. Write down your top 3 action items you would take in your business and/or career if fear were not an issue, and ACT NOW!
  2. Develop a list of simple steps it would take to accomplish your task, even if you don?t have the resources available, with specific dates of completion, and ACT NOW!
  3. Start gathering specialized knowledge that pertains to what you are looking to accomplish, and ACT NOW!
  4. Seek out individuals that possess the knowledge, skills, and resources you need to be successful, and serve them first. Oh, and by the way, ACT NOW!
  5. Drive your endeavors relentlessly to completion. Temporary setbacks are not permanent defeats, and God?s delays are not God?s denials. Develop new steps, and ACT NOW!

I?m sure you noticed that there is one central theme in each of these steps, and that is the requirement to take action. Last September, I went with my entire family to Disney World, and while I was there I rode roller coasters. You know what(?) I still don?t like them! But since when has overcoming our fears not entailed doing things that we don?t necessarily enjoy doing? Ask yourself that question the next time you wonder if there may be more for you in this world than you currently have today.

If you don?t take that step, you?ll never know.

?Til next week?
