The innovative therapy that offers new hope for the borderline ...

, Shaw, I., and Webber, M. A schema focused approach to group psychotherapy for outpatients with borderline personality disorder: A randomized controlled trial. Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry Volume 40, Number 2, June 2009, Pages 317-328According to the National Institute of Mental Health, borderline personality disorder is about 1 to 2.9 percent. This study indicates that BPD is potentially 5-6 times more common as o.

Even the most intensive therapy regimens in the first study was found to be profitable. The savings for several years after the end of the treatment may actually be higher. The latest innovation, the group schema therapy, is likely to be even more cost effective.

In the first study, Dutch researchers, including Dr. Josephine Giesen-Bloo and Arnoud Arntz Dr. , against the Schema Therapy with Transference focused psychotherapy in the treatment of borderline personality disorder. 86 patients were recruited from 4 mental health institutes in the Netherlands. Patients in the study received two sessions per week of SFT or TFP for 3 years. After three years, full recovery was obtained in 45 percent of patients in the SFT condition and 24 percent of those receiving TFP. A year later, the %age fully recovered to 52 percent in the SFT condition and 29 percent in the TFP condition, with 70 percent of patients in the SFT group achieving a significant and clinically meaningful improvement. In addition, the rate of decline was only 27 percent for SFT, compared with 50 percent for TFP, indicating that schema therapy instilled a greater sense of belonging among patients

While other specialized treatments for BPD have demonstrated empirical support, all but schema therapy have serious limitations in their impact on the patient?s functioning and quality of life and Schema Therapy has shown that profitability. Schema Therapy was also associated with high levels of patient and therapist satisfaction with treatment.

The first large-scale studies have been reported in the Archives of General Psychiatry, published by the American Medical Association, the second published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry and the third will soon appear in the research and behavior therapy. Schema Therapy is an integrated approach that develops the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy.

Schema Therapy is targeted and focused on the personality change in psychotherapy transfers deeper than other treatments have recently been limited to the reduction of specific behavioral symptoms of the disease, such as self-mutilation. According to Dr. Young: Other treatments for BPD, such as dialectical behavioral therapy, have also led to more effective coping skills and self-harm patients with a significant reduction therapy regimens are also the freedom of life of pain., L ?self-hatred, and emptiness, making deeper personality changes, and significantly improve their quality of life

Therapists and researchers hope that this pattern repeated validations of the effectiveness of treatment schema for patients with borderline personality disorder ? which for many years was regarded as a rebel ? will lead to clinical research studies increasingly encouraged to learn Schema Therapy . They also hope that this study will convince healthcare insurers to reimburse the costs of an effective long-term psychotherapy for this painful and expensive.

Patients began to feel better and function after the first year, with improvement occurring more rapidly in the SFT group. So the researchers concluded that both treatments had positive effects, with Schema Therapy more successful. In the third study mentioned above, Dutch investigators, including Dr. Arnoud Arntz and Dr. Marjon Nadort evaluated the effectiveness of schema therapy in the treatment of borderline personality disorder when used regularly in mental health facilities health. A total of 62 patients were treated within eight mental health centers in the Netherlands. Treatment was less intense along a number of dimensions, including a song twice weekly sessions once a week for the second year. Despite this, there was no decrease in yield with recovery rates that were at least as low and declining rates. In the second study mentioned above investigators DR. Joan Farrell, Ida Shaw and Michael Webber at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Indiana University Center for the Treatment of BPD and research tested the effectiveness of eight months, thirty-session group therapy scheme treatment as usual of 32 patients with BPD. The dropout rate was 0 percent for patients who received group therapy plus TAU scheme and 25 percent for those receiving TAU alone. At the end of treatment, 94 percent of patients treated with patterns of group therapy in addition to TAU, compared to 16 percent of patients treated with TAU criteria not only met BPD diagnosis. The group therapy treatment scheme results in a significant reduction of symptoms and improvement in overall functioning. The positive effects of processing large study found the model of group therapy suggest that the group mode can increase or catalyze the active treatment for borderline patients. A randomized controlled trial of co-operation with 14 sites in six countries was developed to further explore this productive interaction between groups and schema therapy.

Schema Therapy is an integrated approach based on principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, then expanded to include techniques and concepts from other psychotherapies. Schema therapists help patients change their entrenched, self-destructive lifestyle ? or schemas ? using cognitive, behavioral and emotion focused techniques. The treatment focuses on the relationship with the therapist?s life, every day outside of therapy, and traumatic childhood experiences, which are common in this disorder. Young believes that a more effective therapy schemes arises in the context of its use of reparenting , which is not part of other approaches to BPD
