By NBC News staff

Shellie Zimmerman will not appear at her scheduled arraignment Tuesday after pleading not guilty to perjury for allegedly lying about the family's finances, a court official told WPTV.com.

Shellie, the wife of George Zimmerman, was arrested June 12 on one count of perjury.

"Neither Ms. Zimmerman or her attorney are required to attend the arraignment," Seminole County, Fla., court spokeswoman Michelle Kennedy told WPTV. "Ms. Zimmerman's name will remain on the docket, but her case will not be called."

Shellie Zimmerman's lawyer, Kelly Sims, entered a written not guilty plea last week, along with a waiver for her client not to personally attend her arraignment.

George Zimmerman, 28, was charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 shooting of Trayvon Martin. He pleaded not guilty, and claims that he acted in self-defense.

His $150,000 bond was revoked after it was alleged that he and Shellie Zimmerman misled the court about their finances, neglecting to disclose they had raised at least $135,000 in a PayPal account.

Florida prosecutors said George Zimmerman, speaking by phone from jail, gave detailed instructions to his wife to conduct a series of money transfers and transactions in allegedly coded exchanges that were intended to hide from the court how much money had been raised to help pay for his legal defense.

Zimmerman spoke to wife in code from jail to hide assets, prosecutors allege

Prosecutors released six recorded calls Zimmerman made from April 12 through April 17 while he was in Seminole County Jail. In the calls,?he gave his wife Shellie detailed instructions to change passwords and answer security questions for the accounts, allowing her to move money.?He then instructed her to move the money in a series of transactions carried out over days.

At George Zimmerman's April 20 bond hearing, when asked whether the couple had financial means to assist in his defense, Shellie Zimmerman said: "Uhm, not -- not that I'm aware of," according to an affidavit.

Would sliding back to pre-PSA era cancel progress in prostate cancer?

Monday, July 30, 2012

Eliminating the PSA test to screen for prostate cancer would be taking a big step backwards and would likely result in rising numbers of men with metastatic cancer at the time of diagnosis, predicted a University of Rochester Medical Center analysis published in the journal, Cancer.

The URMC study suggests that the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and early detection may prevent up to 17,000 cases of metastatic prostate cancer a year. Data shows, in fact, that if age-specific pre-PSA era incidence rates were to occur in the present day, the number of men whose cancer had already spread at diagnosis would be three times greater.

"Our findings are very important in light of the recent controversy over PSA testing," said Edward M. Messing, M.D., study co-author, chair of Urology at URMC, and president of the Society of Urologic Oncology. "Yes, there are trade-offs associated with the PSA test and many factors influence the disease outcome. And yet our data are very clear: not doing the PSA test will result in many men presenting with far more advanced prostate cancer. And almost all men with metastasis at diagnosis will die from prostate cancer."

Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men, and is the second leading cause of cancer death in the male population. In 2012 an estimated 241,740 new cases will be diagnosed and 28,000 deaths will occur. Prognosis depends on whether the cancer has spread outside the prostate gland, and the degree to which the cancer cells are abnormal.

In 2011 the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommended against PSA screening in all men, prompting criticism from the medical community. The government panel reviewed scientific evidence and concluded that screening has little or no benefit, or that the harms of early detection outweigh the benefits. One major concern, for example, was that doctors are screening for, finding, and treating non-aggressive cancers that might have remained quiet, causing patients to needlessly suffer from serious treatment side effects such as incontinence or erectile dysfunction.

The U.S. Task Force recommendations against screening caused some confusion, and in response, a special panel of experts from the American Society of Clinical Oncology this month issued its own opinion. The ASCO panel decided that for men with a life expectancy of less than 10 years, general screening with the PSA test should be discouraged. For men with a longer life expectancy, though, it is recommended that physicians discuss with patients whether the PSA test is appropriate for them.

Messing's study looked back at the era prior to 1986, when no one was routinely screened for prostate cancer with a PSA test. To analyze the effect of screening on stage of disease at initial diagnosis, Messing and Emelian Scosyrev, Ph.D., assistant professor of Urology, reviewed data from 1983 to 2008 kept by the nation's largest cancer registry, Surveillance, Epidemiology and End-Results or SEER. They compared SEER data from the pre-PSA era (1983 to '85) to the current era of widespread PSA use (2006 to 2008), and adjusted for age, race, and geographic variations in the United States population.

Approximately 8,000 cases of prostate cancer with metastases at initial presentation occurred in the U.S. in 2008. Using a mathematical model to estimate the number of metastatic cases that would be expected to occur in 2008 in the absence of PSA screening, Scosyrev and Messing predicted the number would be 25,000.

The authors emphasized the study was observational and has some limitations. In particular it is impossible to know if the PSA test and early detection is solely responsible for the fewer cases of metastasis at diagnosis in 2008.

The potential lead-time of screening also should be considered when interpreting the study findings, Scosyrev said. For some people an earlier stage of cancer at diagnosis may not always translate into better survival. This may happen, for example, in cases when the cancer had already metastasized at the time of screening, but the metastasis remained undetected.

In general, however, the study concluded that massive screening and PSA awareness efforts during the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in substantial shifts toward earlier-stage disease and fewer cases of metastases at diagnosis.

In the United States over the most recent 20 years, Messing said, prostate cancer death rates have been reduced by close to 40%. This occurred without substantial changes in how men were treated (via surgery and radiation therapy). Other models published in the scientific literature have suggested that more than 50% of this reduction is due to early detection.

Peer-review system failed in controversial gay parenting study ...

In early June a new social science study was published online ahead of print on the purported differences in children who were raised by gay parents as opposed to those raised by heterosexual parents ("How different are the adult children of parents who have same-sex relationships? Findings from the New Family Structures Study" by Mark Regnerus). Concerns were immediately raised about the study's sample, methodology, analysis, and therefore results. Most notably, the study characterized anyone who ever had a same-sex relationship after having a child as thereafter a gay father or lesbian mother regardless of whether they parented the child together as a couple. If you're studying the effects of same-sex relationships on the rearing of children, don't you think this would be an important detail to pay close attention to? This is just bad science.

And a new review by the journal that published the piece agrees. The editor of the journal assigned a member of the journal's editorial board to assess how such a "bullshit" paper got published in the first place. Where did our system break down? The report and the piece in The Chronicle of Higher Education?is fairly damning and underscores how important our job as scientists is when we put on our reviewer hats:

In his audit, he writes that the peer-review system failed because of ?both ideology and inattention? on the part of the reviewers (three of the six reviewers, according to Sherkat, are on record as opposing same-sex marriage). What?s more, he writes that the reviewers were ?not without some connection to Regnerus,? and suggests that those ties influenced their reviews.
I've not yet been asked to put a reviewer's hat on - nor should I until I'm further along in my studies - but I've seen a few publications through the review process and I've seen my PIs, good, thoughtful PIs, calmly refuse to accept manuscripts because of conflicts of interest. I know it's tough sometimes; the academic nature of science is incestuous and we collaborate or have connections with just about everyone in our narrow fields who is qualified to give our manuscripts a thorough review. Or at least that's how it feels sometimes. But that's no excuse. If you're asked to review a manuscript of an author with whom you have a conflict of interest, kindly refuse to accept, simple as that.
In reality, only two respondents lived with a lesbian couple for their entire childhoods, and most did not live with lesbian or gay parents for long periods, if at all. The information about how parents are labeled is in the paper. Regnerus writes that he chose those labels for ?the sake of brevity and to avoid entanglement in interminable debates about fixed or fluid orientations.? Sherkat, however, called the presentation of the data ?extremely misleading.? Writes Sherkat: ?Reviewers uniformly downplayed or ignored the fact that the study did not examine children of identifiably gay and lesbian parents, and none of the reviewers noticed that the marketing-research data were inappropriate for a top-tier social-scientific journal.? [emphasis mine]
And I suppose this is where it all comes down to: flawed peer-review in this case failed to identify severely flawed social science.

Hearing Protection Devices and What They Can Do for You? | Anti ...

Health and Fitness | Anti-Aging | * Written by Tim Hunsaker | Monday, 30 July 2012 13:43 | Word Count: 536

Using a hearing protection device will help to decrease the level of intensity for sound traveling to the eardrum. There are two different forms: earmuffs and earplugs. Earplugs - These are small inserts that go into the outside ear canal. In order to be effective, they need to block the ear canal completely with a tight seal. There are many sizes and shapes that you can choose from to fit inside of your ear canal. Some of them are custom-made to fit into your individual ear. People who have issues keeping the earplugs in their ears can have them fitted to a headband.

Earmuffs - The earmuffs are made to fit over the entire ear to help form a seal that blocks air from coming in. An adjustable band works to hold them in place. They need to be fitted snugly to make sure the ear canal is blocked off.

When your earplugs or earmuffs are properly fitted into place they help to cut the level of sound by 15 to 30 decibels. Between the two different types of protection devices, they both have been proven to work just as well at reducing sound.

However, earplugs can give you better hearing protection for lower frequency noises, while earmuffs are better at protecting against any high frequency noises, such as an airplane taking off. For the sounds that are higher frequencies, try to think about the treble keys on a piano. Whereas, lower frequency sounds are more along the lines of the bass keys on the piano.

Using earplugs and earmuffs at the same time help to eliminate an additional ten decibels more than just using one of the hearing protection methods by themselves. Whenever you are in a situation that involves noise levels exceeding 105 decibels, you should consider the importance of using two forms of protection. It is imperative to understand that simply placing a cotton ball or tissue paper inside of the ear canal is only going to reduce the noise levels by seven decibels.

Excessive amounts of noise exposure could be the result of a live concert, as well as other venues where there are amplification devices being used. Damage sustained from music is just as permanent as many of the other means out there. Recently, they developed a new type of earplugs for musicians and professional engineers to help handle any difficult noise situations. They are designed to eliminate the plugged ear effect and help maintain even sound reduction when faced with varying frequencies.

Otherwise, if the ear is plugged, it will end up making someone's voice sound deeper and fuller of bass, not to mention louder. Try this yourself by blocking your ears with your fingers and then speaking. You will end up with the plugged ear effect.

Questions ? Answers Archive ? ?The whole market

Lau Ka-keung, also said that the collective wage bargaining mechanism has always been there, but did not play its due role. In practice, trade unions and employers negotiating capacity is relatively poor, ralph lauren pas cher, because wage growth is the business data as the basis, burberry, but companies do not these materials to the trade unions.

Li Shi said that although the initial distribution play a very important role in optimizing the structure of income distribution, several dressed in civilian clothes, but in fact the government can do very limited.

Wang Xiaolin and Li Yi?s experience is a microcosm of the status quo of China?s income distribution, the same students, polo ralph lauren, the same into the state-owned enterprises, but because of a competitive industry, a monopoly industry, ten years down the income has been a difference of 10 times .

The only way to establish the mechanism of regular pay increases is to promote the industry, the regional collective wage consultation system, air jordan pas cher, and this collective bargaining should be based on private enterprise based.

The proposal suggested that countries impose monopoly tax in monopoly industries or their excess profits to the state at the same time, introduce a competitive mechanism, reform the management system of monopoly industries and to strengthen the supervision of the monopoly.

?The whole market, including capital markets, by a labor market supply and demand, because of excessive government intervention may bring about an orderly market, some undesirable consequences. Does not mean that the entire labor market, capital market does not need government regulation but do these relatively limited at this level, so the focus of government regulation should be allocated in the second. ?said Li Shi.

Mention low, expand in,ralph lauren, control is the sixth principle of the income distribution reform, regulation of high-income earners income is the most difficult points of the reform, the main reason for bargaining with vested interests is difficult reform of income distribution. Reform of monopoly industries is the difficulty in difficulty.

The trade gap, the gap between regions as the representative of China malformation pattern of income distribution has to have to change the point. Premier Wen Jiabao said the online exchange with netizens, a society when wealth is concentrated in few hands, so doomed it is not fair, this society is unstable.

Raise the minimum wage

Tax cuts carried out

Human Resources and Social Security Department of Labor wage, director of the Institute of Hanan, the development trend of China?s economy is getting better and better, not price increases, the employment pressure little change in the past, and thus also endorsed raising the minimum wage. He said that low-income wage workers of all types of enterprises mainly rely on timely and appropriate to raise the minimum wage and the establishment of the mechanisms of normal growth in wages to achieve increase in wage income.

The proposal of the KMT Central Committee a report entitled ?On further deepen the reform of monopoly industries the income distribution system made it clear that the income distribution over monopoly industries in favor of the individual, the income of workers more land and the nature of the industry are closely linked, which the relationship between labor productivity appears to be weakening, increasing the income gap between the industry, exacerbated by the inequitable distribution of social income. This not only affects the reproduction of the enterprise, but also directly undermine the country?s revenue, weakening the country?s macro-control capacity.

He said: ?State-owned enterprises, especially state-owned monopoly put profits over to the state; from the government point of view, to take tax relief, which would allow residents share of the increase in the share of labor-intensive small and medium enterprises, the Government none other parts of from the collection of state-owned monopoly profits to make up for. ?

Li Shi suggested that the tax regulation, the Government should make more efforts to prevent the phenomenon of tax evasion and increase transfer payments, to improve social security coverage, high profits and monopoly industries is transferred to the secondary distribution.

Lau Ka-keung As the Government continues to improve the level of pensions for retired workers, the annual growth rate of 10 percent, to about 1000 yuan in Chengdu, the average pension level in recent years, but the wages of the workers have not reached that level this upside down ?phenomenon is not normal.

Although the Government every year the introduction of wage guidelines, but that unlike the minimum wage is the same as the force of law. Although the law will be investigated for the sanctions to enterprises below the minimum wage, but not of sanctions for many years, rising wage enterprises.

Beginning last year, the labor remuneration in the initial distribution in the low proportion of the problem highlighted in various ways in the public eye.

Optimization of the initial distribution, and raise the minimum wage has the same important role in the establishment of the normal wage growth mechanism.

2010 or permission is called the Chinese income distribution reform in the first year. Lee Park on the 7th, the National Development and Reform Commission spokesman said that this year China will as soon as possible the distribution of national income adjustment programs and policy measures. This is the first official to disclose the schedule of the income distribution reform program introduced.

Beijing Normal University, Income Distribution and Li Shi, director of the Poverty Research Center for raising the minimum wage have some concerns. He believes that raising the minimum wage is double-edged sword, the one hand, it can be driven by low-income wage increase, but for businesses, air jordan, causing an increase in labor costs, to some extent, will affect the employment needs of the enterprise are likely to increase unemployed people and unemployed population.

Hanan said that for the regulation of monopoly industries workers high and high income from the source to control the excess profits of the monopoly industries should all be handed over to the state financial, its original free of charge to take up national resources to pay must be increased to the national financial resources occupy additional tax. This high profit change for the secondary distribution of government revenue.

Wang Xiaolin is not just participate in the work of young people, he has come to Shanghai for 10 years, working here, get married, have children, buy a house, also a state-owned wine company executives. Decades, Wang Xiaolin of wages grew by only 10% succeed month after-tax wages of 7000 yuan per month in mortgage and pay the daily expenses, depleted.

??Under the conditions of a market economy, the wage level of workers is mainly determined by the labor market. In this case, the government can control only the minimum wage.

Lee actually believe that the fundamental solution to break the artificial monopoly industries, the most effective mechanism is to introduce more enterprises to enter, the implementation of the mechanism of competition in the industry. For natural monopolies, state control of its payroll, burberry pas cher, wage growth is more rational.

CPPCC panel discussions, abercrombie, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, the Democratic League Central Committee Vice Chairman Zhang Meiying 30 years, China?s reform has been doing the ?addition?, such as land contract responsibility system with remuneration linked to output, to increase farmers? income, abercrombie france, so the reform to be welcomed. now do the ?subtraction? game with the different interest groups, and thus reform becomes very difficult, income distribution is a ?subtraction? reform.
?s mortgage account, abercrombie france, Xiaolin bank card began to light the ?red light?. He always thought that the bank card at least 100,000 yuan in order to have a sense of security in this international metropolis. But since to buy a house after his deposit would be no higher than 5 digits.

To get out of the vicious circle of monopoly industries overpaid, Li Shi is not very difficult. He said that the simple implementation of the payroll management is definitely not enough, it is necessary to implement a structured management ? the positions of monopoly workers can be found in the market price, coupled with reference to an accurate assessment of wage for each position in monopoly industries. This standard to control the wages of employees of monopoly industries.

Therefore, within the hub of recommendations, the next step, the Government must take effective measures to collective wage consultation system as soon as possible to play a role, which will be very helpful to improve the level of the wages of ordinary workers, often sick. Due to economic constraints at home, and improve income distribution structure.

System of normal growth in wages for labor-intensive small and medium enterprises to give tax breaks to encourage and guide these enterprises to increase the wages to the employees. ?Hanan said, and increase wages, expand domestic demand,? the range can be further expanded, ? wage growth of employees at the same time, institutions will gradually implement pay for performance can also be through the establishment of the civil service in remote areas and difficult areas allowances,??For the real existence of ?blind cost, special post allowance in these areas, especially the junior civil servants a reasonable increase in wages. ?

Sometimes the Xiaolin would envy or jealous of his classmates Ribeiro. Ribeiro University after graduation through a variety of relationship into a company of the power industry, one-time payment of the house, eliminating unnecessary procedures and trouble, the annual income of a lot of money in his spare time, but also with the family go around the play, the quality of life do not know how many times Xiaolin high.

In short, the basic idea of ??the current round of reform of income distribution is the ?wages? and ?tax cuts negative? simultaneously, so people can share the results of GDP growth.

Strengthen the collective bargaining ?to increase the wages

In addition, some representatives suggested that the national collection of resources surtax in monopoly industries. These views have been many experts agree.

Reform of monopoly industries

KMT Central Committee, suggested that the process of establishing collective bargaining for wages, must give full play to the role of trade unions. Through the establishment of enterprise collective wage consultation system, and integration of migrant workers dispersed to form a labor pattern of negotiations, in order to build the business the wages of workers in the rational communication adjustment mechanism. Also suggested that, as soon as possible to select some areas of the pilot.

CPPCC members to participate in the Standing Committee met disclosed, the Standing Committee more or less are referred to this problem. One the Standing Committee also made clear that, as the main channel of the residents? income, wage income, the proportion of the allocation of factors of production is low, only about 10% of the cost of business operations, well below the 50 percent of the developed countries.

Human Resources and Social Security Vice Minister Yang Zhiming said that the ?two sessions? during a media interview, the Department is working with the Ministry of Finance and other departments to study the increase in personal income tax threshold, the current personal income tax, high-income class are far more than the threshold, a large number of lower-middle class near in the line of this initial fee. Increase the tax threshold, you can reduce the tax burden of ordinary workers.

It can be expected, the secondary distribution reform and income distribution prior to re-light once the distribution of ideas, the current income distribution reform would focus on raising the proportion of income in the distribution of national income, polo ralph lauren, increase the proportion of work remuneration in primary distribution. At the same time, increasing the financial, tax adjustment in the income of the initial distribution and redistribution.

?Reduce the ordinary workers and tax burden associated with, the government should be effective supervision of the tax status of the high-income earners. Compared with some developed countries, some of China?s high-income groups actually pay personal income tax is not enough, there are a lot of tax evasion, tax evasion, tax evasion opportunities.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, reform and opening up in 1978, the average income of workers of the highest income sectors in China is 1.38 times the lowest income sectors, in 2008, this proportion increased to 14.61 times. From high-income industries, in addition to individual industries, most have a common characteristic, namely, abercrombie, administrative monopoly nature. From the characteristics of various sectors of the income distribution, basically showing that the higher the degree of monopoly, the higher the income, the higher the degree of competition in the lower income compared to the situation. air jordan

Romney: Overpaying taxes disqualifies president

Associated Press

Posted on July 29, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Updated today at 9:30 PM

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney says that if he paid more taxes than were required, he wouldn't be qualified to be president.

The U.S. presidential candidate tells ABC News that American voters expect candidates to pay "only what the tax code requires." He says he hasn't calculated what percentage of his income was paid in taxes but says that he's been audited.

Romney's vast personal wealth has been an issue in the campaign.

Democrats have criticized him for paying only 13.9 percent of his income in taxes during the one year his taxes have been made public.

Romney says he will release an additional year of returns before Election Day. That has left some questioning whether Romney pays a smaller share than other Americans.

(AP) ? Dinh Thi Hong Loan grasps her girlfriend's hand, and the two gaze into each other's love-struck eyes. Smiling, they talk about their upcoming wedding ? how they'll exchange rings and toast the beginning of their lives together.

The lesbians' marriage ceremony in the Vietnamese capital won't be officially recognized, but that could soon change. Vietnam's Communist government is now considering whether to allow same-sex couples to marry or legally register and receive rights ? positioning the country to be the first in Asia to do so.

"Our love for each other is real and nothing changes regardless of whether the law is passed or not," said Loan, 31. "But when it is passed, we will definitely go get registered. I can't wait!"

Even longtime gay-rights activists are stunned by the Justice Ministry's proposal to include same-sex couples in its overhaul of the country's marriage law. No one knows what form it will take or whether it will survive long enough to be debated before the National Assembly next year, but supporters say the fact that it's even being considered is a victory in a region where simply being gay can result in jail sentences or whippings with a rattan cane.

"I think everyone is surprised," said Vien Tanjung, an Indonesian gay-rights activist. "Even if it's not successful it's already making history. For me, personally, I think it's going to go through."

Vietnam seems an unlikely champion of gay-rights issues. It is routinely lambasted by the international community over its dismal human rights record, often locking up political dissidents who call for democracy or religious freedom. Up until just a few years ago, homosexuality was labeled as a "social evil" alongside drug addiction and prostitution.

And Vietnam's gay community itself was once so underground that few groups or meeting places existed. It was taboo to even talk about the issue.

But over the past five years, that's slowly started to change. Vietnam's state-run media, unable to write about politically sensitive topics or openly criticize the one-party government, have embraced the chance to explore gay issues. They have run lengthy newspaper stories and television broadcasts, including one live special that won a top award.

Video of Vietnam's first publicized gay wedding went viral online in 2010, and a few other ceremonies followed, capturing widespread public attention. The Justice Ministry now says a legal framework is necessary because the courts do not know how to handle disputes between same-sex couples living together. The new law could provide rights such as owning property, inheriting and adopting children.

"I think, as far as human rights are concerned, it's time for us to look at the reality," Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong said Tuesday in an online chat broadcast on national TV and radio. "The number of homosexuals has mounted to hundreds of thousands. It's not a small figure. They live together without registering marriage. They may own property. We, of course, have to handle these issues legally."

Globally, 11 countries have legalized same-sex marriage since the Netherlands became the first to do so in 2001. Only a few U.S. states allow it, but President Barack Obama provided hope for many couples worldwide after announcing his support earlier this year.

The issue has remained largely off the table across Asia. In Thailand, many tourists see a vibrant gay, lesbian and transgender community, but it exists largely as part of the country's lucrative entertainment industry, separated from politics and conservative Thai society.

Muslim-dominated nations such as Indonesia have strict laws against homosexuality. Sodomy can result in up to 20 years in jail and caning in Malaysia. But that hasn't stopped some from continuing to fight for more rights and visibility.

In Singapore, more than 15,000 people ? double last year's turnout ? recently held up pink lights in a park at night to support acceptance of the community in a modern city-state where gay sex remains illegal, even though the law is not enforced.

In Taiwan, a 2003 bill to recognize same-sex marriage failed to receive enough support to make it law, though a lesbian couple is expected to tie the knot in August at a Buddhist monastery.

Vietnam will also hold its first public gay pride parade Aug. 5 in Hanoi. The country is socially conservative, but the government restricts the kind of politicized religious movements that typically push back against same-sex marriage in other countries. Gay pride events also seem to pose little threat to Communist Party's dominance.

The same-sex marriage proposal still has several hurdles before it could become law. The Justice Ministry will consider opinions from the public along with government agencies before submitting its draft proposal to the National Assembly next May on whether to recommend same-sex marriage or some other type of legal recognition with rights. Then, it must be approved by a majority of parliament.

"Some people told me if Vietnam could legalize it, it would be very good example for other counties to follow," said Le Quang Binh, head of the nonprofit Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment, which is consulting on the marriage law. "People think that talking about it is a big step forward already. ... I hope it will lead to more openness or tolerance for gays and lesbians in Vietnam."

As for Vietnamese partners Loan and Nguyen Thi Chi, who share a one-room apartment down a narrow alley in Hanoi, they say their love and commitment is real, regardless of whether a law exists to recognize them when they marry next month. But they hope the new proposal will ease stigma that lingers around same-sex couples.

Chi, 20, knows the pain of discrimination all too well. She recently dropped out of college after being publicly outed by a note taped to one of her classroom doors saying she was "diseased." She was harassed and bullied for a year and a half on campus until finally deciding she'd had enough.

"Things must change," she said. "Even though it was not a nice experience, more and more people are interested in knowing about the community. And the more people that know about it, the more people will have a different view on it."

Apple Claims This 2005 iPhone Prototype Proves It Didn't Copy Sony [Apple]

Last week, it came to light that Samsung was planning to attack Apple based on the fact that its iPhone design copied Sony products—and the evidence was convincing. But now the Verge has uncovered Apple's response, which suggests there were convincing iPhone prototypes kicking around well before the Sony-esque model was dreamt up. More »

Irrevocable Trust vs Revocable Trust - Difference and Comparison ...

An irrevocable trust cannot be changed once it is in effect but a revocable trust can be modified. While a revocable trust is designed to eliminate probate, an irrevocable trust can eliminate estate taxes and offer asset protection. Both are inter vivos trusts i.e. trusts that go into effect during an individual?s lifetime.

Comparison chart

?

Improve this chart Irrevocable Trust Revocable Trust
Meaning: An inter vivos trust that cannot be changed once it goes into effect An inter vivos trust that can be terminated at a later date
Property Owner: Trust Individual
Alterable: No Yes
Asset protection: Yes No
Estate tax charged?: No Yes
Avoid probate: Yes Yes
Reduces Income Taxes/Capital gains tax?: Yes No

edit Inheritance

As the benefactor of an irrevocable trust no longer technically owns the property in the trust, it is not included when calculating estate taxes on their death. The property can be passed to an heir without going through probate.

Properties in revocable trusts are included when calculating estate taxes. They can be passed to an heir without going through probate. Revocable trusts can also be used in cases of mental illness, as they can be transferred straight to the trustee without a lengthy court case.

edit Asset protection

Properties in an irrevocable trust are protected if the owner is sued.

Properties in a revocable trust have no creditor protection.

edit Modification

An irrevocable trust cannot be changed and the property cannot be retrieved.

A revocable trust can be modified through a trust agreement or revoked entirely through an amendment and restatement.

Irrevocable trusts are used by individuals who wish to reduce their payment of estate tax, and who wise to protect their assets from creditors. Finally, they can be used for charitable estate planning ? if the trustmaker transfers the assets into a charitable trust while they are still alive, they will receive a charitable income tax deduction in the year the transfer is made.

Revocable trusts are usually used by individuals who wish to plan for a mental disability, as assets in these trusts can be managed by an individual?s Disability Trustee instead of a court-supervised guardian. They can also be used to avoid probate, which is the court-supervised process of locating and determining the value of a deceased person?s assets, paying their final taxes and then distributing the remainder to heirs. Instead, assets in a revocable trust will pass directly to the beneficiaries. Finally, they can be used to keep the details of property and its beneficiaries private.

Overnight ratings up for first night

NEW YORK (AP) ? Preliminary estimates show that Saturday night's NBC telecast scored the highest ratings for the first evening of an Olympics competition outside of the United States.

The Nielsen company said Sunday that its measurement of the nation's largest cities showed ratings for the Olympics telecast were up 8 percent over opening night in Beijing four years ago. A fuller measurement of viewership is expected later on Sunday.

NBC was the target of many Twitter complaints on Saturday for not telecasting the marquee men's swimming competition live, instead showing it on tape delay in prime-time. But prime-time ratings are the report card that the company cares about the most and, thus far, viewers are responding to the strategy.

YOU'RE THROWING THAT AWAY?

The U.S. women's gymnastics team wasted no time showing why they're the best vaulters in the world.

All four vaulters do the Amanar, considered the hardest vault in the world. They breezed through the routine in Sunday's Olympic debut, and in qualifications, only the top three scores count.

So it was Aly Raisman's score that was thrown out ? and every other country would kill to have gotten her 15.8.

Meanwhile, McKayla Maroney did not appear to be slowed by her broken toe. The reigning world champion in vault qualified for the event finals.

UK STAMP OF APPROVAL

Most national Olympic committees are giving their athletes financial incentives to win a medal ? members of Malaysia's badminton team could even get a bar of gold bullion each worth $600,000 if they win the gold.

But for the hometown Brits, philatelic fame will have to do.

British medal winners receive no prize money from their federation, but the Royal Mail has promised to produce a stamp overnight honoring each of the country's gold medal winners. The stamps will be sold at 500 Post Offices in books of six for 60 pence (94 U.S. cents) each stamp.

Still, it could be worse. Some countries refuse to put you on a stamp until you're dead.

Om joined an exclusive group of weightlifters on Sunday to have lifted three times their body weight in the clean and jerk.

"How can any man possibly lift 168kg? I believe the great Kim Jong Il looked over me," according to the internal news agency at the Olympic Games.

"I am very happy and give thanks to our Great Leader for giving me the strength ... It is all because of him."

GATOR CHOMP

The University of Florida marching band made an appearance on the Mall during the women's road race, entertaining a few hundred people suffering through intermittent showers.

The band had to wait nearly an hour to perform because of one particularly strong downpour.

An official at the cycling venue said that 216 members of the Gators' band made the trip from their campus in Gainesville, Fla. The band will return home in the coming days and begin preparing for Florida's first home football game, scheduled for Sept. 1 against Bowling Green.

PINNING THEIR HOPES

Kim Rhode's family thought of everything before the London Games ? even bringing their own Olympic pin for the trip.

To commemorate her quest to become the first American to win an individual-sport medal in five straight Olympic Games, Rhode's family made a small number of pins. The image: She's standing on London Bridge, larger than life, taking aim at an unseen target, with the U.S. and British flags below.

The family said it received approval from the U.S. Olympic Committee to use an image of the Olympic rings on the pin.

Rhode's signature is etched on the back, as are the years of her now-five Olympic appearances.

And since she's a shooter, it comes with a twist ? push the button on the back, and yep, "bullets" (red flashes of light, actually) come out the barrel of the gun.

OH, THE CACOPHONY

We are, apparently, talking too much. Electronically, at least.

The IOC says social media users helped cause problems for traditional broadcasters during the first big event of the London Olympics.

Television viewers watching the men's cycling on Saturday got little information about the riders' location and timings on the 250-kilometer (155-mile) road course. Broadcasters, whose commentators were also deprived of information, blamed the Olympics Broadcasting Service for the glitch with GPS signals.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams says the OBS service was jammed by "hundreds of thousands" of people sending texts, pictures and updates to social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Acknowledges Adams: "We should have foreseen that."

The problem appeared to be solved for the women's road race Sunday.

FLAMESPOTTING

Want to see the Olympic cauldron? Got a helicopter?

London Mayor Boris Johnson had an answer for people who said, hey ? wait a minute ? I can't see the Olympic flame at all from outside the stadium. Just ascend the Orbit, the towering structure in Olympic Park with an observation deck at the top.

So we did. And what did we find? If you really peer out and stretch your neck, you can see a little bit of the cauldron and its flames, sitting in the distance looking like a small rubbish-bin fire. The mayor, it seems, wins on a technicality.

Plans are under way to move it to a more prominent location, albeit one still within the stadium.

Take a close look at the fingers in this photo by AP's Chris O'Meara.

Many volleyball players use tape as support, but U.S. opposite Destinee Hooker uses it to keep her loved ones close.

In the team's opening match against South Korea, she spelled out "VET" on the tape, a nod to sister Marshevet Hooker, who was on the gold medal-winning 4x100 U.S. relay team in the Beijing Olympics. Destinee also wrote "STEVE" for fiance Steven Coulter. And she's not limited to her finger tape: Hooker has "Mom and Dad" written on her shoes.

SLOW SWIMMING

At the Olympic Aquatics Centre, swimmers from developing countries populate many early heats and fans are applauding them all.

Jennet Saryyeva, an 18-year-old from Turkmenistan, took third in the first heat of the women's 400-meter freestyle Sunday at 5 minutes, 40.29 seconds, well behind the other two swimmers.

By comparison, leading qualifier Camille Muffat of France touched in at 4:03.29.

Still, Saryyeva says her time was a personal and national record, and she only began training for the event last year.

Saryyeva said Turkmenistan, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia that borders Afghanistan and the Caspian Sea, has about 10 professional swimmers in all.

"Here it's just me and one boy and my coach," she said.

OUT OF STEP

One woman stood out during India's walk through Olympic Stadium at the opening ceremony. That's because she wasn't supposed to be there.

Friday night's party crasher was not wearing the yellow and white dress that every other Indian woman was wearing in the group, yet still managed to situate herself next to flag bearer Sushil Kumar at the front of the line as they walked around the stadium.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London organizers, says he plans to meet with the Indian delegation to discuss what happened.

"She was a cast member who clearly got slightly overexcited," Coe says. "She shouldn't have been there."

Coe also insists she posed no danger to the Indian team or the proceedings because, as a cast member for the opening ceremony program, she had to go through all the security measures to get into the park that everyone else does.

"She shouldn't have been in the opening ceremony," Coe says, "but don't run away with the idea that she walked in off the street."

THAI HIGH HOPES

One family from west London visiting the ExCel on Sunday are more than a little excited to be here ? they couldn't get tickets in the British balloting system and had almost given up hope. Then friends back in Thailand told them about a Thai agency with tickets available, and they jumped on them.

"The price of the ticket was a little bit higher than from the British ticket website, but it is a once in a lifetime experience," says Vichayaporn Varasit, 13, as her family surrounds her and chants, "Thailand, Thailand!" The group of 10 are all heading into Arena 2 to see Thai boxer Saylom Ardee take on Gani Zhailauov from Kazakhstan.

ROYAL SNAPSHOT

Now that's a photo op.

An Olympic technician got a special souvenir from Britain's Zara Phillips, granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, just after she rode her dressage test Saturday in the equestrian eventing competiton at Greenwich Park.

He stopped a relaxed and smiling Phillips as she walked back to the stables with her husband, British rugby star Mike Tindall, and asked for a picture with her. Tindall obliged by taking the camera himself and making the snap.

Phillips had just performed her dressage test in front of an enthusiastic and partial British crowd hoping for another medal for the home team. While Phillips' dressage score was respectable, she asserted that her horse High Kingdom was looking forward to jumping the cross-country course Monday, a specialty of his.

"I think he wants to get out there now," Phillips said to reporters. "He's a bit bored with dressage."

Apple v. Samsung court filings reveal Sony-inspired iPhone, kickstand-equipped iPad and other prototypes

There's no telling how much more we'll see once the big Apple vs. Samsung trial finally gets underway in a San Jose federal court next week, but today has already seen the release of a swath of new documents full of surprises. Most notably, that includes a range of previously unseen Apple prototype devices, including various renderings of both the iPhone and iPad. One standout is an iPhone 4-esque device that quite literally wears its Sony influence on its sleeve (in one instance with the logo changed to "Jony," a la Apple's Jony Ive). According to the filing, it was designed by Apple's Shin Nishibori, and was apparently up against another more metallic, iPod-style device at one point (ultimately winning out despite some protestation).

But those are far from the only iPhone prototypes that have been revealed. There's also an elongated device identified by the codename N90, seemingly with a small screen and space for a keypad or input area of some sort below, plus a device with squared off corners somewhat reminiscent of the Motorola Photon 4G. Another prototype goes in the opposite direction, with sharp corners and a slightly rounded back. As for the iPad, we've gotten a look at some more recent prototypes than the early 2000-era model that surfaced earlier this month. While there's no stylus in sight, there are a couple of iPad prototypes with kickstands built into the back of the device, and a number of considerably different designs than what Apple ultimately settled on. Dive into the galleries below for a closer look at the whole lot.
